Description

Pacer E-1500 cyanoacrylate adhesive is a high viscosity single component ethyl cyanoacrylate that runs 1300 to 1700 cP and fills to .010 in, double the gap of any other grade in Pacer’s General Purpose E Series. It’s the grade for loose fit-up, uneven mating surfaces, and joints where gravity is working against you: at this viscosity it holds position on a vertical face far better than the thin and medium grades instead of running down the part. It bonds plastics, rubber, metal, and ceramic, fixtures in 1 to 5 minutes, and dispenses from the bottle. E-1500 meets MIL-A-46050C Type II, Class 3 and A-A-3097 Type II, Class 3, and is currently offered in a 20 gram bottle.

How Gap Filling Works with Cyanoacrylate

Cyanoacrylate cures by reacting with the trace surface moisture on your parts, and that moisture has to reach the middle of the bond line. In a thin joint it gets there immediately. In a .010 in gap it has further to travel, which is the real constraint on gap filling with this chemistry and the reason a thick grade behaves differently on the floor.

  • Clean both faces. Oil, grease, mold release, and cutting fluid all block the bond, and a wider gap gives contamination more room to sit in.
  • Apply to one surface only and close the joint promptly. Coating both faces makes the bond line thicker still and slows cure further.
  • Fill the gap, don’t overfill it. One free-falling drop covers roughly one square inch of bond area even in a thicker joint.
  • Expect the center of the bond line to cure last. Fixture time is 1 to 5 minutes and 80% of strength develops in 15 to 30 minutes, but give a full gap the longer end of the range before loading it.
  • This is where a Pacer accelerator earns its place. Pacer states accelerators are compatible and used specifically to speed full cure through larger gaps, which is exactly the E-1500 case.
  • Two tradeoffs come with the accelerator. Applied over exposed adhesive it can leave a white frost on the part, called chlorosis, which usually wipes off with Pacer X-9 Debonder on a cotton swab. And overall cure strength can drop. Test on actual parts before committing a process.
  • Past .010 in, stop reaching for cyanoacrylate. A gap wider than the grade is rated for gives you an uncured core no matter how much you apply, and a two part structural adhesive is the right tool.

Fixture and full cure both move with temperature, relative humidity, bondline thickness, and the substrate pair. Test on actual parts before you lock in a production process.

Choosing a Viscosity in the E Series

All four grades are the same ethyl cyanoacrylate chemistry. Viscosity is what changes, and it drives how much gap you can bridge, whether the adhesive stays put, and how strong the finished joint is.

Read that table honestly and E-1500 trades strength for gap. 2200 psi steel shear is the lowest in the series, because a thicker bond line carries load worse than a thin one. That is not a reason to avoid it. A properly filled .010 in joint in E-1500 will always beat a starved .010 in joint in E-100, and there is no point specifying a stronger grade for a gap it cannot fill. Match the grade to your actual fit-up first, then read the strength number.

E-1500 is the thickest grade in the E Series. If the adhesive cannot move at all, Pacer RX-50M Gel is a true gel. For porous, acidic, or contaminated substrates where any standard cyanoacrylate struggles regardless of viscosity, Pacer’s RX Range Extended series is the non-surface-sensitive alternative. And if the joint sees real peel or repeated flexing, ask us about Pacer’s HP Series, which publishes T-Peel data the E Series does not.

Performance in Production

  • .010 in gap capability is double any other grade in the E Series. On parts that do not mate cleanly, that is the difference between a bond and a starved joint that fails in service.
  • At 1300 to 1700 cP it holds position on a vertical or overhead face far better than the thin and medium grades, which run off before they set. Pacer does not publish a sag or slump figure, so test your own part orientation rather than assuming zero movement.
  • 12% volume shrinkage is the lowest in the series, which matters more here than anywhere else. A thick bond line has more material to shrink, so the grade with the widest gap having the least shrinkage is the right way round.
  • 2200 psi tensile shear on steel is the lowest in the series, with 4000 psi tensile and 4 to 6 ft-lbs impact. That is the cost of the gap. Design the joint with enough bond area to carry the load at that number.
  • Fixture in 1 to 5 minutes and 80% of strength in 15 to 30 minutes, but a filled gap cures from the outside in, so give a wide joint the longer end of that range before you load it.
  • Pacer accelerators are compatible and are specifically intended to speed full cure through larger gaps, which makes them more relevant to this grade than to any other in the series. Expect possible white frosting on exposed adhesive and some loss of cure strength.
  • On ABS, nylon, rigid PVC, and SBR the part failed before the bond in D1002 testing, so on those plastics your joint strength is set by the substrate. EPDM is the exception at 100 psi.
  • Heat distortion is 240F, the lowest in the series, and the cured range tops out at 180F. If the assembly runs warm, ask us about the TX Series, which is built for continuous elevated temperature.
  • Currently offered in a 20 gram bottle only. If you need the thick grade at production volume, call us before you build a process around it.

Is Pacer E-1500 weaker than the thinner grades?

On steel shear, yes: 2200 psi against 2400 for E-100 and 2700 for E-5 and E-40. A thicker bond line carries load worse than a thin one, and that is true of every cyanoacrylate, not just this one. Should I use an accelerator with Pacer E-1500?

More often than with the thinner grades. Pacer states accelerators are compatible and used specifically to speed full cure through larger gaps, which is the whole point of this grade. Two things to plan around: accelerator over exposed adhesive can leave a white frost called chlorosis, which usually comes off with Pacer X-9 Debonder on a cotton swab, and overall cure strength can drop when accelerators are used. Test on actual parts before committing a production process.

Does Pacer E-1500 meet MIL-A-46050C?

Yes. Pacer lists E-1500 as meeting MIL-A-46050C Type II, Class 3 and A-A-3097 (Commercial Spec) Type II, Class 3. The class tracks viscosity, so E-1500 is the only Class 3 grade in the current E Series, with E-5 and E-40 at Class 1 and E-100 at Class 2. If your job needs a certificate of conformance, ask for it when you order.

What sizes does Pacer E-1500 come in?

How should Pacer E-1500 be stored, and what is the shelf life?

Refrigerate unopened bottles at 40F (4C) for best results, then let the adhesive come up to room temperature before opening. Opening a cold bottle pulls condensation into the material, and a thick grade is slower to warm through than a thin one, so give it time. Once opened, store in a cool, dry location. Stored that way, expect a one year shelf life.
