Branding the Best – ITW Devcon
For many years, ITW Devcon has been supplying upper echelon adhesives products in two particular areas: OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) and MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Operations). Although not limited to these two sectors, it is its “bread and butter,” having both unparalleled authority in these fields, and innumerable industry professionals remaining loyal to the Devcon brand on account of its OEM and MRO expertise. We’ll cover a few of these trusted products in today’s blog, and offer a bit more about the ITW Devcon brand.
ITW Devcon has been advancing the OEM and MRO industries for north of five decades; its original claim to fame was the unprecedented “Plastic Steel,” introduced some 50 years ago as the very first putty alternative to welding and brazing. Since Plastic Steel® it has remained true to its mission, creating and mastering similar products, like the customer favorite, ‘Wear Resistant Putty,’ detailed below.
Devcon’s Wear Resistant Putty (pictured below) is somewhat of a modern equivalent to the original Plastic Steel. Intended for use in repairing machine ways, valve seats and bodies, flange faces, and tracing guides, this all-purpose epoxy is totally smooth and non-rusting. It’s especially unique in that it can bond to metals such as steel, iron, brass, aluminum, plus surfaces like ceramic, concrete, and even some plastics. In addition, this putty (or liquid if you so prefer) contains wear-resistant fillers which make it ideal for low friction applications.
Another popular choice from Devcon is its 5 Minute Epoxy, often used in MRO situations. This rapid-curing, general purpose encapsulant is named for its excessively convenient and time-saving application process: dispense and mix in mere seconds, allow 15 minutes to dry, and wait just one hour for functional strength. It’s that quick! 5 Minute Epoxy is best used for bonding metals, fabrics, ceramics, glass, wood, and concrete. In addition to its quick curing, this epoxy is self leveling, 100% reactive, and has low viscosity (10,000 cps).
To round out our Devcon product trio, it’s necessary to highlight its “Plastic Welder” structural adhesive. This tough solution has exceptional impact and peel resistance to most plastic surfaces, making it the ideal choice for surfaces where weathering or solvent exposure is likely. It can and should be bonded to PVC, fiberglass, wood, polycarbonate, concrete, and composites like ABS, FRT, PPO, PCBB, Metton®, Lomod®, etc. Below are a few other features that make plastic welder an excellent bonding option for the aforementioned applications:
- Requires little surface preparation
- Effective at bonding dissimilar substrates, i.e. ceramics, wood, and standard engineered plastics
- Its black color is UV stable
- It can reach functional cure in just one hour
- Its finished bond is load bearing and resistant to wearing, humidity, and extreme temperature variation
