Branding the Best – Shin-Etsu Silicones

shin etsu logoFrom the company’s beginning Shin-Etsu Silicones has been somewhat specialized. And although it does have many products to its name, and a separate chemical division, it has, to a large degree, focused on a specific type of product, and it has mastered that product. If you ask anyone privy to the world of silicones, they will probably attest to the Shin-Etsu name. So, what do they specialize in? To put it simply, they focus on and produce advanced, often times exact, silicone compounds that service the healthcare, electronic, and automotive industries, among a couple others. We’ll cover Shin-Etsu’s specialties in today’s blog and get you acquainted with a few of their most popular products.

Because we at Chemical Concepts are one of a handful of stateside distributors for this Japan-based company, you can eliminate the lead times associated with importing their products by sourcing us as your supplier!

The KE-45 product (pictured below) is a one component, room-temperature cure sealant that develops, once cured, into a tough and resilient rubber-like substance. It is low odor, neutral cure, and non-corrosive, plus it adheres (without the need for priming) to various types of metals, plastics, glass, and ceramic. The KE-45 is typically used with form-in-place gasketing and the sealing of electronic cavities/vessels. This silicone sealant comes in several colors – black, white, gray, red, and translucent, and can withstand consistent temperatures of up to 450 °F and short periods of up to 500 °F.

The KE-3475 is another single component RTV sealant/coating that’s often used in the realm of electronics. Used most commonly to coat circuit boards, this non-corrosive, self-leveling, low viscosity silicone can either be applied by selective spray coating, mass coating, or flow coating. An interesting characteristic about the KE-3475 is that it contains a UV tracer, which allows for easy inspection.

The KE-420 shares many of the same traits as its silicone siblings, like make-up, (single component  rubber-like sealant) application (electronic sealing and form-in-place-gasketing) and adhesion, (metals, plastics, glass, and ceramics) but the KE-420 is set apart by being optically clear. It is sometimes necessary when coating or sealing electronic devices that may be seen by the naked eye to be invisible; this silicone sealant, which is all but invisible, delivers this desired effect for such functions.

Much like the KE-420, which shares many characteristics with other specialty silicones in the Shin-Etsu product suite, the KE-3498 is similar but also set apart by one major trait. It’s similar in that it’s a one-component silicone that bonds with excellence to metal, plastic, glass and ceramic, used frequently with gasketing and electronics. It’s different in that it’s the most environmentally friendly of the bunch.  It’s a Grade 1, Class 1 rated High Green Strength sealant that bonds and seals with the best of them, but also is totally conscious of the environment.
