Introducing: Permabond Structural Acrylic TA4246

Permabond’s new TA4246 structural acrylic is a two-part, no mix structural adhesive ideal for environments that are quite unforgiving. Excellent environmental stamina and chemical resistance make the TA4246 among the strongest acrylic bonds available when it comes to impact resistance and peel strength. Used commonly in the aerospace industry, where environmental extremes are the norm, this product has excelled, and can even be used to replace rivets or welding, maintaining durability while adding a totally lightweight alternative. The TA4246 isn’t one dimensional either, but can rather be applied to a wide variety of substrates, from metals like aluminum and copper, to wood and most plastics.

Permabond Engineering Adhesives is a leader in structural acrylic adhesives, or adhesives fashioned for high strength and highly resistant environments. The TA4246, and others from Permabond, are used on many substrates like steel, aluminum, other metals and alloys, glass, wood, carbon fibre, and many composite materials. These high peel strength acrylics can even replace welding, brazing, or mechanical fasteners, evidence enough that these bonds can hold their own in high stress applications. Even more, once bonded (as opposed to mechanically fastened) surfaces tend to undergo a much easier manufacturing process, improved bonded performance, and a better finish, plus they typically have a higher bond strength, better stress distribution, and substrates are not easily damaged by the bonding process.

  1. 1. After surface in use is completely dry and free of grease, apply Initiator 46 to one of the two surfaces in question. Metal surfaces like aluminum or copper can be brushed with an abrasive to remove the oxide layer.
  2. 2. Apply the structural adhesive to the other surface.
  3. 3. Assemble both components using plenty of force, making sure the adhesive is spread thin. Within a maximum of two hours, the parts should be completely bonded after applying the initiator.
  4. 4. Be sure to maintain pressure until handling strength is achieved. Handling time will vary according to factors like the gap and surfaces in question, or the joint design.
  5. 5. Allow 24 hours for full cure. Cure times can be accelerated by applying heat.
