Our Customers Are Loving the Benefits of Structural Adhesives

Lord LogoBy now, many of our customers at Chemical-Concepts.com are becoming very interested in the practice of using structural adhesives to replace welding, brazing, riveting and other mechanical fastening methods.

(New applications are constantly being tested for structural adhesives – and the outcomes are consistently testing very positively.)

The Structural Adhesive market is growing globally due to the increase use of plastics in the market. Structural adhesives aid in the bonding of dissimilar substrates which reduces weight, corrosion resistance and durability.  Due to testing there are positive outcomes in the market.

Here are a just a few examples of successful usage:

Marine industries: structural adhesives are proving to be of big benefit in applications that require significant resistance to chemicals like kerosene, ethylene glycol, and hydrocarbon oil.

Farming: metal fence repairs are so much easier with an easily portable structural adhesive, rather than bringing a fence post back to the shop for welding.

Automotive industries: the use of rivets is starting to lose favor, for structural adhesives offer a better resistance to corrosion, while bringing down costs.

Lower costs and higher performance are putting structural adhesives in the forefront – and more and more industries and customers are welcoming their use. Here is one high-quality structural adhesive that we encourage you to consider.

LORD® 850 Acrylic Adhesive

LORD® 850 acrylic adhesiveLORD® 850 acrylic adhesive, in combination with LORD Accelerator 25GB, can be used to replace riveting, welding, brazing and other traditional mechanical fastening methods. This toughened structural adhesive performs particularly well in low-temperature environments and applications that are subject to high impact, high peel loads or high fatigue.

LORD 850 adhesive, when mixed with the proper accelerator, creates an adhesive system that bonds a wide variety of prepared or unprepared metals and some engineered plastics. This adhesive system is specifically formulated to provide the highest impact and peel strengths available in a room temperature curing adhesive with exceptional cohesive failure mode.

LORD Accelerator 25GB allows precise control of the adhesive bond line thickness due to its content of glass beads.

Three applications that are experiencing notable levels of success with Lord 850 acrylic adhesive are:

  • trailer assembly,
  • commercial vehicle assembly, and
  • elevator assembly

But its success is certainly not limited to those three options. Our sales team can help you discover how Lord 850 and the other structural adhesives that we carry can help you control costs and improve your processes.

Some of the Features and Benefits of LORD 850

Versatile – bonds a wide range of unprepared metals with minimal substrate preparation, as well as polymer composite substrates such as FRP.

Durable – provides high strength for high-end structural bonding applications; 100% elongation improves impact strength and fatigue resistance.

Temperature Resistant – performs at temperatures from -40°F to +300°F (-40°C to +149°C); tolerates e-coat bake with cohesive failure at 338°F (170°C).

Environmentally Resistant – resists dilute acids, alkalis, solvents, greases, oils, moisture, salt spray and weathering; provides excellent resistance to indirect UV exposure.

Non-Sag – remains in position when applied on vertical or overhead surfaces, allowing for greater process flexibility.

Need more convincing to leave traditional mechanical fastening methods behind and try using structural adhesives like LORD 850 or other options that we carry?

Some More Advantages of Structural Adhesives

Cost-effective: your savings will add up as you reduce the number of mechanical fasteners, spot welds and filler metal required to attach two substrates or create a joint. They’re also time-saving too, as installing mechanical fasteners or welding usually requires much more time and effort.

They just look better: in the manufacturing process, adhesives are generally hidden between two substrates, which usually look better than using welding and mechanical fasteners. Plus, an adhesive bonded joint results in a smooth, clean surface, which requires minimal surface prep prior to final finishing.

More access: Engineers can be more innovative in product design, because they don’t have to consider how welding or using mechanical fasteners would need to be accessed. Why? Adhesives can be pre-applied to parts that would be otherwise inaccessible.

Tougher: Structural adhesives can increase the rigidity of structures and provide the necessary strength and fatigue resistance.

Can handle the heat – and the cold: High-performance structural adhesives (like LORD 850) can form resilient bonds and maintain its strength over a wide range of temperatures too.

Adhesives spread the load: While a screw hole or a rivet in a substrate concentrates the stress at the hole, adhesives spread the load over the entire bonded area. Plus, using an adhesive eliminates the need for holes in the metal – so leads to less of a chance for corrosion and rust.
