Permabond’s New Food Grade Epoxies

Permabond Engineering Adhesives LogoIt seems like we’ve covered Permabond a lot in our blog, but being a Gold Star distributor for one of the world’s leaders in adhesives leaves us privy to all the press about any new products, accessories, or innovations.

Permabond specializes in several categories of adhesives: Cyanoacrylates, Anaerobics, Polyurethanes, Structural Acrylics, Flexible Adhesives, UV Light varieties, and of course, Epoxies. Epoxies are many times leveraged in industries like marine, automotive, and aerospace because of their room temperature curing capabilities and high peel strength, among other characteristics. But who would ever consider a two-component epoxy for environments where food is being handled, processed, or packaged? Permabond’s new ET5145 and ET5147 breaks the mold!

Overview: It’s obvious that we all take special precaution with the safety and integrity of our food, which is why the FDA requires special standards of safety for adhesives that come into close contact with food. Compliant of the FDA’s CFR 175.105 and 175.300 statutes for adhesive safety, the ET5145 and ET5147 are completely hazard free, two-part epoxies that can be used effectively and safely in the bonding and sealing of appliances and food contact equipment. These adhesives work well with substrates such as plastic, metal, composite material, ceramics, and glass.

Perhaps the biggest advantages of the ET5145 and ET5147 are their ability to bond quickly and easily to a host of surfaces, their capacity for high strength rigidity, the fact that they can be easily cleaned once cured, and their excellent resistance to water, food, heat, and cleaning agents.

a stocked refrigerator with foodFeatures: There are many dynamic features that make this range of epoxies a cut above the rest, like:

  • Can be cured at room temperature or by adding heat, which will quicken the process
  • Superb shock and impact resistance
  • Good environmental durability
  • High Shear and peel strength
  • Can bond to a wide variety of substrates
  • Can be easily applied from a dual cartridge
  • Perfect for the accurate alignment of parts

Comparing the two:

Although both epoxies meet the demands of the FDA, there are a few distinctions between the ET5145 and ET5147.

  1. 1. Mix Ratio – THE ET5145 is mixed at a ratio of 1:1, while its counterpart has a 2:1 mix ratio.
  1. 2. Temperature Range – The ET5147 can handle more heat, ranging from -40 degrees C to 120 degrees C. The ET5145 is only tested to bear -40 degrees C to 80 degrees C.
  1. 3. Shear Strength – Although similar, the ET5145 has a bit more shear strength than the ET5147, having the ability to withstand 3,000 psi.
  1. 4. Pot Life – The ET5147 edges its partner in this category, taking a bit less time at room temperature (40-60 minutes). The ET5145 has a pot life ranging from 50-80 minutes.

These two brand new products from Permabond are indeed unique and high performance choices for industries like general assembly, maintenance and repair, appliances, and more. For more information about the ET5145 and ET5147 don’t hesitate to contact our sales team!
