Why Your KEEP-NUT Insert Is Spinning and How to Fix It

Every once in a while, customers call us with questions about installing the KEEP-NUT system. In most cases, the issue comes down to drilling. Either the hole depth is not set correctly, the wrong drill bit is being used, or less commonly, the hole has been drilled too wide.

The most common issue we see is what appears to be a “spinning” KEEP-NUT when tightening a bolt. While it may look like the insert itself is rotating in the stone, that is not what is actually happening.

In nearly every case, the KEEP-NUT body is fully locked into the stone and is not spinning at all. The issue occurs when the hole has been drilled deeper than the required specification for that specific KEEP-NUT version. KEEP-NUT inserts are available in multiple depths, including 5.5 mm, 6.5 mm, 8.5 mm, 11.5 mm, and 15.5 mm.

When the hole is drilled deeper than the insert’s designed depth, the KEEP-NUT does not fully bottom out. Because of this, the internal threaded component is free to rotate under torque, which creates the appearance of a “spinning” insert.

Once the KEEP-NUT is properly bottomed out in the hole for the specific version being used, the internal threads are supported and the rotation stops immediately.

Watch the short video below to see exactly why this “spinning” happens and how to correct it in seconds.

How to Correct a “Spinning” KEEP-NUT Insert

Every Starter Kit and Trial Kit includes a Go / No-Go gauge. This tool is critical for verifying proper hole depth and diameter before installation.

  1. Check the hole depth first
Insert the Go side of the gauge into the hole.

    • If the Go side fits properly, the depth is correct.

    • The gauge includes millimeter markings so you can visually confirm the depth.

  2. Check for an over-sized hole
If the No-Go side fits into the hole, the hole diameter is too wide. This typically means the wrong drill bit was used.

Use the Correct Drill Bit for the Material

Using the proper drill bit is essential for proper KEEP-NUT performance.

Quick Fix for a Hole That Is Too Deep

If the hole is slightly over-drilled and you are experiencing a “spinning” insert, you can often correct the issue by using the Go / No-Go gauge as a punch.

Lightly tap the gauge into the hole with a hammer until the KEEP-NUT is fully bottomed out at the proper depth. Once seated correctly, the internal threaded component will stop rotating and the system will perform exactly as intended.
