The Lord 400 Series with Accelerator 19 – The Mechanical Fastening Substitutes

When it comes to eliminating the painstaking work associated with traditional, mechanical fastening methods, like welding, brazing, and riveting, the Lord suite of structural adhesives takes first place. In making the substitute too, you shouldn’t expect to lose strength or durability, as these adhesives, paired with the proper accelerator, are just as strong and just as enduring. In today’s Blog we’ll focus on Lord’s 400 Series, to be used in tandem with its 19 or 19 GB Accelerator.

The 400 Series

Lord’s 400 Series acrylic adhesives include three types: they are the 403, 406, and 410. This trio of acrylics is particularly astute with low temperature environments and those that are sure to boast high impact and high peel loads. Each of these adhesives, distinct from one another for their range of working times, can bond an assortment of unprepared metals and engineered plastics. This class of acrylics is also known for being the strongest in terms of impact and peel resistance, commonly considered the best available from a room temperature curing option.

These adhesives are all virtually the same as regards make-up and purpose, but they are distinct, as we mentioned, in one important way: working and handling time. This comes in handy when more or less time is preferred for your particular application. This range offers good accommodation for the variety of process requirements that you can expect in industries accustomed to this type of work.

Acrylic Type – Working Time/Handling Time

Lord 403 – 2-4 min / 4-6 min

LORD 406/19GBLord 406 – 6-10 min/ 12-17 min

Lord 410 – 20-45 min/60-120 min

Lord’s 406 (pictured below) is a good mid-range acrylic option, with a working time of roughly 6-10 minutes and a handling time range of 12-17 minutes.

More Benefits from the 400 Series

  • Temperature resistant – Performs well at temperatures ranging from -40° F to 300° F
  • Environmentally resistant – The 400 Series can resist certain acids, alkalis, solvents, oils, grease, moisture, etc.
  • Non-Sag – Its non-sag formula spells ease-of-use as it can remain in position when applied vertically

Accelerator 19 and 19 GB

These accelerators, which complete the mechanical fastening substitute team, are to be paired with the 400 Series acrylics to achieve the strongest of bonds. Accelerator 19 is pivotal in the bonding process as it works to improve the high temperature resistance of the 400 Series adhesives. On the other hand, the 19GB has a different specialty; this accelerator type allows pinpoint control of the bond-line thickness, thanks to its glass bead content.
