Sika’s Suite of Promoters, Primers & Cleaners

We dug into the topic of promoters, accelerators, activators, primers, and enhancers in our last Blog, with special attention to promoters and accelerators from Lord Corporation and our very own, Chem-Set. Today we’ll highlight some products from Sika, a household name in the area of caulks and sealants, but also a reputable producer of primers, promoters, and hand cleaners, a fact that we venture to explain in today’s Blog.

Sika Remover 208Sika Remover 208 – 1L Can – Remover 208 from Sika (pictured here) is used to clean painted substrates and remove traces of Sikaflex or similar polyurethane sealants.

APPLICATION

Remover 208 from Sika is used predominantly in three ways:

1 – Removing uncured, excess sealant (particularly Sikaflex products) from application tools or soiled surfaces.

2 Pre-cleaning contaminated, non-porous surfaces.

3 – Cleaning painted areas prior to bonding.

Removing – After removing the lion’s share of any residue or excess adhesive with a knife or similar scraping object, moisten a rag or cloth with Remover 208 and simply wipe off the remaining uncured adhesive.

Cleaning – With a towel moistened with 208, (not dipped) wipe the surface clean. As often as possible, use fresh paper towels in this process. Once the solvent evaporates, stroke until dry with a clean towel. Repeat the process as necessary.

Primer(s) – Sika 200 Series

There are four Sika Primers that we offer at Chemical Concepts, like Sika Primer 215 for instance, each having an affinity or specialty. As you can see in the below chart breakdown, each of the four work best on particular substrates. The aforementioned 215 is best used in priming wood/plywood, hard PVC and ABS. Primer 210 on the other hand is more appropriate for surfaces like steel (stainless or galvanized). This chart includes Sika’s Activator series as well but is still a helpful guide for those that often prime or promote before bonding.

SikaSense Series Surface Cleaner & Adhesion Promoter

SikaSense products, available at Chemical Concepts, deliver fast drying adhesion enhancement for EPDM rubber and plastic material like polypropylene and polyethylene. The benefits of the SikaSense line include low VOC, a broad adhesion range, very good heat and aging resistance, and high initial strength capacity. These promoters, like the SikaSense 3502/11, are often used in the automobile industry with door inserts and panels, and leather covered dashboards.

Sika Hand Cleaner – 72 Ct Bucket

Last but not least is somewhat of a bonus product from Sika, at least in relation to the other products we’ve covered today. Sika’s pre-moistened cleaning and degreasing hand towels are a quick and easy way to remove grime, grease, dried primer, and urethanes from hands. These convenient wipes can replace shop towels, rags, paper towels, etc. and are pleasantly scented. There is also no extra treatment required in cleaning your hands, like rinsing, drying or removing excess residue.
