Bonding Clear Acrylic and Polycarbonate

Plastic Bonding Solutions

Clear Plastic Adhesives: Acrylic & Polycarbonate

Prevent crazing, frosting, and yellowing with the right chemistry.

Bonding clear plastics flawlessly is one of the most challenging tasks in fabrication. The right adhesive depends entirely on your need for optical clarity, structural strength, UV weathering, and curing speed.

This guide helps fabricators select the absolute best adhesives for bonding acrylic (PMMA / Plexiglass) and polycarbonate (PC / Lexan) used in retail displays, protective enclosures, signage, and light diffusers.

Choosing an Adhesive for Clear Plastics

Polycarbonate and acrylic require very different approaches to prevent substrate failure or stress-cracking (crazing). Polycarbonate demands more flexible adhesives to absorb impact, while acrylic requires solvent cements or UV-curable adhesives to achieve a museum-quality, invisible bond.

  • UV Adhesives: Create the most invisible, optically clear bond lines possible.
  • Cyanoacrylates: Offer lightning-fast interior bonding but lack long-term weather resistance.
  • Clear Urethanes: Provide high clarity and excellent flexibility for polycarbonate (Lexan).
  • MMA Adhesives: Deliver incredibly strong structural bonds (slight amber tint possible).
  • Solvent Cements: Chemically weld acrylic for a seamless finish, but are not recommended for polycarbonate.

Adhesive Options for Clear Plastics

UV Curable

Highest optical clarity and nearly invisible bond lines.

  • On-demand cure with light
  • Prevents stress-cracking
  • Excellent impact resistance

Cyanoacrylates

Fastest fixture for quick, rigid indoor assemblies.

  • Low-bloom grades prevent white frosting
  • Best for precise, small joints
  • Not for outdoor weathering

Shop Cyanoacrylates →

Clear Urethanes

Flexible, clear urethanes formulated for plastics.

  • Optically clear & non-yellowing
  • Ideal for bonding Lexan
  • Highly resistant to vibration

Shop Clear Urethanes →

Structural MMAs

High-strength structural bonds to plastics and metals.

  • Extreme peel & shear strength
  • May yellow slightly over time
  • Excellent for sign manufacturing

Recommended Adhesives – Shop by Need

Start with the performance you need first, then pick the product that fits your joint design, work time, and equipment.

For the clearest possible bond line

  • Permabond UV6302 – Ultra-low viscosity wicking UV adhesive for tight-fitting acrylic and polycarbonate joints.
  • Permabond UV643 – Thixotropic UV adhesive for vertical edges and rigid plastic assemblies with very high strength.

For the fastest fixture & cure

  • Permabond 940 – Low-bloom cyanoacrylate prevents “frosting” on small, clear interior joints. Fixtures in seconds.
  • Weld-On 3 or 4 – Water-thin acrylic solvent cements that set in 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Permabond TA4204 – Toughened structural acrylic with 1 to 2 minute working time for high-speed production.

For flexible polycarbonate (Lexan)

  • Lord 7550 A/C – Clear, self-leveling urethane for Lexan and polycarbonate where flex and impact resistance is required.
  • Weld-On 55 or 58 – Clear, VOC-free urethanes with excellent UV stability for thicker plastic joints.
  • Araldite 2028-1 – Clear, UV stable polyurethane ideal for trim caps and LED assemblies.

For structural strength + clarity

  • Ultralok 607 – Crystal clear MMA for high-strength bonding of acrylic, polycarbonate, and aluminum in sign/display work.
  • Weld-On 46C – Clear, non-sag structural acrylic for acrylic-to-metal or acrylic-to-acrylic joints that must carry heavy load.

For chemical welding acrylic only

  • Weld-On 3 – Fastest capillary solvent cement for museum-quality edges when fit-up is perfect.
  • Weld-On 4 – Slightly slower set time to reduce the risk of blushing/frosting on sensitive acrylics.
  • Weld-On 16 – Thicker, high-strength acrylic cement for filling small gaps in imperfect joints.

If you are unsure where to start

Which Chemistry Should You Choose?

Choose UV Adhesive if:

  • Crystal clear, invisible bond lines
  • Fast curing with a UV light source
  • Bonds for displays, diffusers, guards
