Food-Safe Epoxies from Permabond

Permabond logoPermabond is a very popular brand that Chemical Concepts is proud to distribute. Our customers are fan of the wide variety of categories of adhesives offered by Permabond – a few include Cyanoacrylates, Anaerobics, Polyurethanes, Structural Acrylics, Flexible Adhesives, UV light varieties, and of course, epoxies.

Industries like marine, automotive, and aerospace are usually the first type of arenas you think of to use epoxies, due to sought after characteristics like room temperature curing capabilities and high peel strength. But two Permabond epoxies are popular in the food service industry, due to their FDA compliance.

Food–safe epoxy is sought after for its safe usage in the packaging and food service industries. Food-grade adhesives are perfect for coating and lining cans, woodworking, kitchen tools and other standard surfaces which might make contact with food during preparation. Actually, food-safe epoxies can be found in many of the wooden kitchen tools that most restaurants and consumers have in kitchens already, such as salad bowls, cups, serving platters and more. Simply put, companies that manufacture products that come in direct contact with food during preparation and/or consumption depend on high-quality food epoxies, like ET5145 and ET5147 from Permabond.

Let’s take a look at these two products.

PERMABOND® ET5145

PERMABOND® ET5145 is a 1:1 mixable epoxy adhesive. It has excellent resistance to impact and vibration and is ideal for structural bonding of metal, wood, composites and certain plastics. ET5145 is high strength and has excellent environmental durability. It is suitable for applications where cured product is to come into contact with food or beverage.

PERMABOND® ET5147

PERMABOND® ET5147 is a 2:1 mixable epoxy adhesive. It has excellent resistance to impact and vibration and is ideal for structural bonding of metal, wood, composites and certain plastics. Its rapid cure speed coupled with its structural strength makes this adhesive suitable for a wide variety of applications. ET5147 is high strength and has excellent environmental durability.

Both have FDA compliant formulation.

Of course, constant research is done in any product that regularly touches food. As epoxies and adhesives can have powerful chemicals in them, companies that work within the food service industry are constantly looking for new food epoxies that can be used in their products. These food epoxies are created specifically to deal with oils, liquid, acidic liquids and exposure and are created using materials that will form a clear and safe finish that can’t affect human health especially when the final product comes in contact with food or food preparation surfaces.

Compliant of the FDA’s CFR 175.105 and 175.300 statutes for adhesive safety, the ET5145 and ET5147 are completely hazard free, two-part epoxies that can be used effectively and safely in the bonding and sealing of appliances and food contact equipment. These adhesives work well with substrates such as plastic, metal, composite material, ceramics, and glass.

Perhaps the biggest advantages of the ET5145 and ET5147 are their ability to bond quickly and easily to a host of surfaces, their capacity for high strength rigidity, the fact that they can be easily cleaned once cured, and their excellent resistance to water, food, heat, and cleaning agents.

Here are a few additional features for these food-safe epoxies:

  • Can be cured at room temperature or by adding heat, which will quicken the process
  • Superb shock and impact resistance
  • Good environmental durability
  • High Shear and peel strength
  • Can bond to a wide variety of substrates
  • Can be easily applied from a dual cartridge
  • Perfect for the accurate alignment of parts

Industries like general assembly, maintenance and repair, appliances, and other industries involving food contact and preparation depend on quality products like these from Permabond.
