Description
RTV118 silicone is a clear, flowable, one-component acetoxy-cure silicone rubber compound supplied here in a 5 gallon pail. It is used for thin-section potting, filling small surface voids, and self-leveling protective coatings where the material needs to move into small crevices. The product cures with atmospheric moisture at room temperature and releases acetic acid vapor during cure, so it should not be used on delicate copper, brass, or other corrosion-sensitive electrical assemblies.
Where RTV118 silicone is used
This compound fits industrial coating, sealing, mold-support, and general fabrication work where a pourable RTV can reach tight areas better than a paste. The flowable body helps it level over shallow surfaces, wet into small voids, and create a flexible protective layer after cure. It can be considered for food-contact applications where the finished rubber article and use conditions match FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 requirements, but the application still needs normal qualification by the user.
How RTV118 silicone cures
Acetoxy RTV materials cure from the exposed surface inward as moisture reaches the sealant. The open time and cure depth depend on bead size, temperature, humidity, and air movement. Use clean, dry surfaces, avoid trapped sections that cannot reach moisture, and allow enough cure time before putting parts into service. For metals that can react with acetic acid during cure, choose a more suitable neutral-cure or electronics-grade silicone.
