Description
Permabond 738 cyanoacrylate adhesive combines rapid room-temperature fixture with a toughened black formulation for assemblies exposed to impact, peel, and vibration. The 5,000 cP viscosity stays where it is placed, supports gaps up to about 0.020 inch, and helps cover dark bond lines. It adheres to steel, aluminum, galvanized steel, many plastics, and elastomers, making it useful for speaker components, black PVC wire work, rubber parts, housings, and mixed-material production assemblies.
Where Permabond 738 Cyanoacrylate Adhesive Works
Choose 738 when a conventional thin instant adhesive runs out of a joint or lacks the toughness needed for handling and service. The black color suits dark substrates and can make application coverage easier to inspect. Typical bonds reach fixture strength in about 20 to 30 seconds, although actual speed depends on substrate chemistry, gap, temperature, and humidity. Close fitting, clean parts cure fastest. Polyethylene, polypropylene, PTFE, and silicone generally require a compatible surface primer and application testing.
Application Steps
- Remove oil, dust, release agents, and loose surface contamination.
- Apply a small, controlled bead to one mating surface.
- Assemble and align the parts immediately.
- Press the joint together so the adhesive spreads into a thin, continuous film.
- Keep the parts still until fixture strength develops, then wait before applying full service load.
Use the minimum amount that fully wets the joint. Excess material slows cure and can increase blooming around exposed edges. Abrasion followed by a suitable solvent wipe can improve bond consistency on metals and rigid plastics. Confirm compatibility before production when bonding coated surfaces, sensitive plastics, or parts exposed to aggressive chemicals. Acetone and other polar solvents can attack cured instant adhesive bonds over time.
Joint Design and Process Control
Instant adhesives favor joints loaded in shear or compression and can be less tolerant of peel at a free edge. Add overlap where the design allows, avoid large unsupported gaps, and keep the bond line consistent from part to part. On a production line, verify bead size with a sample weight or visual standard and keep dispense tips clean. Track fixture time under the actual room humidity because dry conditions can slow the moisture-activated cure. If an activator is considered, test its effect on appearance and long-term strength before release. Store the closed container upright in the recommended temperature range and let chilled material reach working temperature before opening to reduce condensation inside the package. Record the approved bead size and fixture interval for repeat production.
