Description

SikaBiresin AP100 epoxy coating, formerly sold as ProSeal EZ, is a white two-component epoxy used to fill and seal the cloth weave on composite and wooden boats. One coat applied by brush, roller or squeegee fills the texture in FRP reinforced structures and leaves a porosity-free surface that sands. It replaces the conventional method of blending resin, hardener and thickening additives, and it is resistant to water immersion above or below the waterline.

The hardener sold on this page is SikaBiresin AP100-1, the 15 minute option (ProSeal EZ 15). Part A resin and Part B hardener are separate items, so add both to your order. The job runs in four moves: prep the surface, apply one mixed coat inside the pot life, let it cure to sand, then sand and prime. Sika limits this product to experienced professional users and calls for testing on your actual substrates and conditions.

Performance in Production

  • The 15 minute pot life with AP100-1 favors small, quick batches. Mix only what you can apply inside that window, because the TDS does not allow application past pot life.
  • Cure to sand in 4 to 6 hours shortens the wait before the first sanding pass. The slower AP100-3 hardener takes 16 to 24 hours.
  • A passing vertical sag test at 50 mil means the mixed coating holds on vertical surfaces at that film thickness.
  • One application by brush, roller or squeegee fills the weave with no porosity, so there are no thickening additives to blend into the resin.
  • Filling the weave in one coat keeps the fabric pattern from showing through the finish, and the porosity-free surface sands smooth.
  • Low cured density keeps the weight a fill coat adds to a boat down.
  • Do not topcoat directly over AP100. Prime first with a primer recommended by your topcoat manufacturer.

Chemical Resistance, AP100-1 Immersion Test

Sika reports mass change after immersion for the AP100-1 system (formerly ProSeal EZ 15). Results are at 96 hours unless noted.

How to Fill and Seal Cloth Weave With SikaBiresin AP100

SikaBiresin AP100 fills and seals fabric texture in a single mixed coat, then sands to a porosity-free surface. These are the shop steps from the TDS for the AP100-1 system.

  1. Read both SDS before you open anything. The resin and the AP100-1 hardener carry serious health hazard classifications. Ensure good ventilation, wear gloves, glasses and protective clothing, and follow the SDS for respiratory protection.
  2. Prepare the surface. Clean it thoroughly, rough it up, clean it again and let it dry.
  3. Keep tools clean. Mixing boards, containers and applicators must be free of contamination.
  4. Mix Part A and Part B at 5 parts resin to 1 part hardener by volume. Follow the proper mixing procedure in the TDS.
  5. Apply right after mixing with a brush, roller or squeegee, inside the 15 minute pot life at 25°C. One application fills the weave.
  6. Let it cure to sand, 4 to 6 hours at 25°C. Then sand and finish as needed.
  7. Prime before you topcoat. Do not topcoat directly over AP100.

The process runs on fiberglass (FRP reinforced) and wooden marine structures, interior or exterior, above or below the waterline.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SikaBiresin AP100 used for?

SikaBiresin AP100 fills and seals the cloth weave on composite and wooden boats. One coat leaves a porosity-free surface you can sand, above or below the waterline.

Is SikaBiresin AP100 the same as ProSeal EZ?

Yes. ProSeal EZ is the former name. AP100 resin with AP100-1 hardener is ProSeal EZ 15, and AP100 resin with AP100-3 hardener is ProSeal EZ 60.

Do I need both Part A and Part B, and which hardener is included?

Yes, the resin does not cure without the hardener. Part B on this page is SikaBiresin AP100-1, the 15 minute hardener. Part A and Part B are sold as separate items.

What is the mix ratio for SikaBiresin AP100?

Mix 5 parts resin to 1 part hardener by volume (100:20 at 25°C). Check the label on your pail for the weight ratio.

How long is the pot life and when can I sand it?

With AP100-1 the pot life is 15 minutes at 25°C and it reaches sanding hardness in 4 to 6 hours at 25°C. Do not apply it past the pot life.

Can I use SikaBiresin AP100 below the waterline?

Yes. Sika lists it for exterior and interior marine structures, above or below the waterline, and it is resistant to water immersion. Sika recommends testing on your actual substrates and conditions first.

Can I paint over SikaBiresin AP100?

Not directly. Sika says to prime over AP100 with a primer recommended by your topcoat manufacturer, then apply the topcoat.

Is SikaBiresin AP100 resistant to fuel and chemicals?

Sika rates its chemical resistance as good, and the table above shows the immersion results. Ketones such as MEK and acetone, and gasoline with 25% ethanol, destroyed the cured material in Sika testing.
