Description
Chem-Set VST3025 is a 10 mil clear ultra-thin bonding tape used as a 3M 9473 alternative for attaching thin, light, and small parts where a foam tape would be too thick and a liquid adhesive too messy. At 0.010 in it disappears into the joint, which is why it runs in die-cut shapes, nameplates and ID plates, bezels, lens and display attachment, and electronic assembly work. Bonds on contact with no cure time, no mixing, and no dispensing equipment.
The 100% acrylic construction handles curved and irregular surfaces and molded parts, and the closed cell structure is wind and water resistant so the tape seals the joint as it bonds. Designed for high and medium surface energy materials: glass, glass epoxy, stainless steel, galvanized and anodized steel, and coated aluminum. Supplied in 60 yd rolls, sold by the individual roll with no case minimum, and PFAS and PFOS free per the manufacturer.

What VST3025 Bonds To
VST3025 is formulated for high and medium surface energy surfaces. The thin adhesive film gives good performance on molded parts, curved surfaces, and die-cut shapes where a thicker foam would bridge poorly or show at the edge.

Where a different grade is the better answer. For harder-to-bond medium surface energy plastics like PVC and ABS, purpose-built grades outperform this one. For a bond that has to be truly invisible between transparent materials such as glass, acrylic (PMMA), and polycarbonate, there are grades designed specifically for that. For low surface energy plastics like polypropylene and polyethylene, you need either a primer or one of the low surface energy grades. How Thin Bonding Tape Works
A 10 mil tape has almost no ability to conform, so it demands more of your surfaces than a foam grade does. Where a 47 mil foam tape will absorb a bowed panel, this one needs both faces to actually meet. That makes surface prep and pressure the whole ballgame.
- Check the fit first. At 0.010 in there is no gap filling. If the two surfaces have a visible mismatch, this is the wrong thickness and you want a foam grade instead. Rigid, flat, well-matched parts are where this tape earns its keep.
- Bring everything to 65°F or warmer. Below that the adhesive is too firm to flow into the surface, and thin tapes are less forgiving about it than thick ones because there is less adhesive to work with.
- Clean thoroughly. Fingerprints and light oil come off with an isopropanol wipe. Grease and mold release need a stronger non-polar cleaner first. Molded parts are the usual problem here, since release agent is invisible and will defeat the bond completely. Wipe in one direction with lint free tissue, and use surface test inks to confirm your cleaner is working.
- Handle die-cut parts by the liner. Keep the liner on until the part is positioned. On small die-cut shapes there is very little tape to grab and the open face picks up dust immediately.
- Apply real pressure. Roll or press in one direction at 10 to 50 N/cm, around 30 N/cm for most work, at about 24 in/min. On small parts use a platen or a press rather than a hand roller so the whole bond area sees the same pressure.
- Let the bond build. Shear rises from 81 lb/in² at 20 minutes to 87 lb/in² at 24 hours, so you can see the wet-out happening in the numbers. Handling strength is immediate. Plan load bearing service and shipping around the 24 hour mark.
Design the joint for shear or tension. Peel and cleavage loads concentrate stress on one edge, and a thin tape has less material to distribute it. With only 10 mil of thickness, added bond area is your only lever, so widen the tape or increase the footprint rather than reaching for a thicker grade if clearance is the constraint.
Performance in Production
- 109 lb/in² normal tensile is the highest in the clear VST group, higher than the 40 mil and 60 mil foam grades. Thin and rigid pulls harder in straight tension than thick and compliant does.
- 87 lb/in² shear at 24 hours means a 1/2 in strip across a 2 in bond carries roughly 87 lb before a safety factor. Small footprints go further than people expect on this grade.
- 15 lb/in peel is the tradeoff for going thin. Keep exposed edges out of the design or protect them mechanically.
- At 10 mil the bond line effectively disappears, which is why it works on bezels, lens attachment, and anywhere a foam edge would read through a finished surface.
- Die-cuts cleanly into shapes, tabs, and small footprints, and handles curved and irregular surfaces that a thick foam would fight.
- 212°F long term and 320°F short term covers process heat exposure in assembly, and the -40°F floor covers cold service once the bond is made.
- Good plasticizer resistance, which matters when bonding to vinyl and flexible plastics that would soften a lesser adhesive over time.
- 60 yd rolls, half again more length per roll than the 36 yd foam grades, so fewer changeovers on a converting line.
- Test on your own substrate in your own process before you run production. Published values come from lab panels, and molded part surfaces in particular vary more than most shops expect.

Service temperature is a separate question: once the bond is properly made the assembly holds from -40°F up to 212°F continuous and 320°F short term.
