Description
The Gem Sander bearing from Chem-Set is the replacement bearing for the Chem-Set Gem Sander rotary tool used in stone fabrication and slab edge work. When the Gem Sander starts to vibrate, run noisy, or lose RPM under load, the Gem Sander bearing is the first part to inspect, because bearing wear is the most common cause of those symptoms on rotary stone tools that see daily shop use.
When to replace the Gem Sander bearing
Stone fabrication shops run the Gem Sander hard. Water, slurry, vibration, and side loads on the spindle wear bearings faster than dry-shop power tools. Symptoms that point to a bad bearing include audible roughness at no-load, increased run-out at the abrasive head, lateral play in the spindle, and reduced RPM under load. Catching the wear early and swapping the bearing extends the life of the spindle and motor and avoids the larger repair bill that comes from running a worn bearing until it seizes.

Installing the Gem Sander bearing
Disconnect power and water supply before disassembly. Refer to the Gem Sander service notes for the exact teardown sequence, but in general the steps are remove the abrasive head, pull the spindle, press out the worn bearing, press in the new bearing, and reassemble. Use a bearing press or arbor press for a clean install and avoid hammer impact, which damages the new bearing race and shortens service life. After install, run the sander dry at low RPM for a minute before applying water and load.
