Description

IB1178XT double coated tape is a 0.5 mil clear PET carrier coated on both faces with 1.2 mils of aggressive XT rubber adhesive. The carrier is the point. Unlike an unsupported transfer film, the PET core carries tensile strength through the middle of the tape, so a die cut part holds its shape on the press and in the operator’s hand. Adhesive on both faces means one bond to the substrate and one to the mating part, protected until use by a two sided silicone coated 60# white SCK liner.

Where IB1178XT double coated tape fits

This is the general purpose grade in the Macbond XT line, built for bonding to semi smooth surfaces at a low coat weight. Foam fabrication, felt and fabric bonding, gasket fabrication and insulation work all run on it. Appliance assembly, building and construction trim, and automotive interior mounting use it where the joint needs a clean thin bond and the substrate is not fighting back. It performs on most low surface energy surfaces, which is where a lot of general purpose rubber tapes quit. At 1.2 mil per side it is the right call when the application is less demanding and a heavier coat weight would only add cost and slow the die.

The 54 inch by 150 foot roll is a converting width. It is meant to be slit and die cut in house rather than applied off the roll by hand, and narrower slit widths can be quoted for a production run.

How IB1178XT double coated tape performs

Static shear runs past 500 hours to failure and elongation is 100%, so the tape moves with a panel instead of tearing at a corner. Initial tack is high, which means parts hold position the moment they are placed rather than needing a clamp or a cure. The rubber adhesive wets out fast across a wide range of substrates. The 60# SCK liner is the cost effective release in this family and it feeds cleanly through converting equipment. Handling and die cutting are the practical strengths here, because the thin PET core takes a rotary die without adhesive ooze or edge distortion.

The liner is siliconized on both faces, so the tape winds on itself with a single web separating the laps and releases cleanly from both adhesive sides as it feeds. Clean and dry the substrate first, then set the bond with firm even pressure so the adhesive wets fully into the surface.

Specifications

Choosing between this and a carrier free film comes down to whether the part needs tensile strength through the middle. If appearance and the lowest possible profile decide the job, an unsupported transfer film is the better call. If the part has to survive handling, or one face has to bond to something the other face will not, the double coated construction wins.
