Long Open Time Polyurethane Sealant Sikaflex 201 US is a long open time sealant from Sika. It is a multi-purpose, 1-component polyurethane that cures from moisture in the air into a permanent, flexible, elastic seal. It is used for sealing joints, seams, and gaps in HVAC, metal buildings, tanks and grain bins, non-vehicular window perimeters, and other industrial applications. The longer working time suits large joints and jobs where setting and tooling take time. It is supplied in 300 ml cartridges, 600 ml unipacks, 4.5 gal pails, and 50 gal drums. |

Seek manufacturer’s advice and perform tests on original substrates before using Sikaflex 201 US on materials prone to stress cracking. Suitable for experienced professional users only.
Performance in Production
- A 4 hour skin time at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity gives a long working window for large joints, long runs, and jobs where tooling takes time. Tooling and finishing still have to be done inside the skin time.
- A Good non-sag rating means the bead holds its shape on vertical joints instead of slumping.
- Shore A 45 with 550 % elongation at break gives a flexible, elastic cured seal that Sika describes as permanent.
- It processes from 5 to 40 °C (41 to 104 °F), with 15 to 25 °C (59 to 77 °F) as the optimum for substrate and process material. Reactivity and application properties change across that range.
- It runs through manual, pneumatic, and electric piston guns and through pump equipment. Sika’s System Engineering Department advises on selecting and setting up a pump system for pail and drum use.
- The cured sealant can be sanded and painted. Paint after a skin forms. 1C-PUR and 2C-acrylic paints are usually suitable, and baking paints call for a full cure first.
Common Applications
- Sealing joints, seams, and gaps in HVAC applications
- Sealing joints and seams in metal buildings
- Sealing tanks and grain bins
- Sealing non-vehicular window perimeters
- Sealing to metals, metal primers, and 2-component paint coatings
- Sealing to ceramic materials and plastics (test first on any plastic prone to stress cracking)
- Other industrial joint, seam, and gap sealing

How to Apply Sikaflex 201 US
These steps follow the Sika TDS. Run them on a test joint with your own substrates before production.
- Prep the surfaces. They must be clean, dry, and free of grease, oil, and dust. Pre-treatment depends on the substrate, so check Sika’s Pre-Treatment Chart for 1-component polyurethane and verify on your original substrates.
- Apply the sealant. Process between 5 and 40 °C (41 to 104 °F), with 15 to 25 °C (59 to 77 °F) as the optimum. Use a manual, pneumatic, or electric piston gun, or pump equipment.
- Tool and finish inside the skin time. Sika recommends Sika® Slick as the finishing agent. Test any other finishing agent for compatibility first.
- Let it cure. Cure comes from atmospheric moisture. It runs slower at low temperatures because the air holds less water.
- Paint after a skin forms. 1C-PUR and 2C-acrylic paints are usually suitable. If the paint needs a baking process, let the sealant fully cure first. Paint is usually less elastic than the sealant and can crack in the joint area, so test all paints under your manufacturing conditions.
- Clean up. Uncured sealant comes off tools and equipment with Sika® Remover-208 or another suitable solvent. Cured material can only be removed mechanically. Wash hands and exposed skin right away with an industrial hand cleaner and water, and keep solvents off skin.
Substrates covered by the TDS: metals, metal primers and 2-component paint coatings, ceramic materials, and plastics. Test on original substrates before using it on any material prone to stress cracking.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Sikaflex 201 US used for?
Sikaflex 201 US (also called Sikaflex-201 US, Sika 201 US, and Sikaflex 201) is a 1-component polyurethane sealant for sealing joints, seams, and gaps in HVAC, metal buildings, tanks and grain bins, non-vehicular window perimeters, and other industrial applications. It comes in 300 ml cartridges, 600 ml unipacks, 4.5 gal pails, and 50 gal drums.
What does long open time mean for Sikaflex 201 US?
It means a longer working window before the sealant skins over. The TDS gives a 4 hour skin time at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity. Tooling and finishing have to be done inside the skin time, and temperature changes the real window.
What colors does Sikaflex 201 US come in?
Sikaflex 201 US comes in white, aluminum gray, tan, MB bronze, deep bronze, limestone, and black. Not every color is offered in every package size, so check the sizes table above. Call us for availability on a specific color and size.
Which Sikaflex 201 US colors are NSF listed?
Per the TDS, aluminum gray, capitol tan, black, and white are listed under NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 for Drinking Water System Components. Aluminum gray, black, and white are listed under NSF Proprietary Substances and Nonfood Compounds. Call us if you need a listing for another color.
Does Sikaflex 201 US meet AAMA specifications?
Yes. The TDS says Sikaflex 201 US meets the requirements of AAMA 803.3 Type I and AAMA 808.3.
Can you paint over Sikaflex 201 US?
Yes. Per the TDS, it can be painted after a skin forms and can be sanded. 1C-PUR and 2C-acrylic paints are usually suitable. If the paint needs a baking process, let the sealant fully cure first. Test every paint under your production conditions.
What does Sikaflex 201 US bond to, and does it need a primer?
The TDS lists metals, metal primers and 2-component paint coatings, ceramic materials, and plastics. Whether a substrate needs pre-treatment depends on the substrate, and Sika’s Pre-Treatment Chart suggestions have to be verified by tests on the original substrates. Test first on any plastic prone to stress cracking. Call us with your substrate and we can point you to the right prep.
How do you dispense Sikaflex 201 US?
It runs through manual, pneumatic, and electric piston guns and through pump equipment. Sika’s System Engineering Department can advise on selecting and setting up a pump system. Call us if you need help matching equipment to the cartridge, unipack, pail, or drum.
