Since 1997, Quantum Silicones has been manufacturing specialized silicone elastomers for a range of applications such as architectural, statuary, special effects, prosthetics, prototyping, and many more. Founded by its two current principals, Tom Loman and Phil McDermott, QSi’s Virginia-based manufacturing site utilizes the latest technology in silicone compounding and equipment.

QSi’s products aren’t strictly for use in these fields, however. A full line of industry-proven silicone gels has also been developed for use in aerospace, automotive, lighting, and electronic applications. QSi has made enormous strides in creating silicone encapsulants, potting compounds, adhesives, conformal coatings, fabric coatings, and clear elastomers.

One of our favorite Quantum Silicones products is the QSi 216 Clear Silicone Encapsulant. This revolutionary two-part, transparent liquid silicone which cures at either room temperature or at elevated temperatures. It has an extremely low viscosity, which allows for easy flow around complex parts. This silicone is ideal for providing electrical insulation and shock resistance.

Some key features include:

• 10:1 mixing ratio for automatic dispensing equipment or hand mixing
• Contains no solvents
• Non-yellowing catalyst system
• Hydrolytic stability and reversion resistance

Silicone encapsulants are a great product for use in providing a flexible, protective barrier against a variety of environmental factor. Once cured, the two-component encapsulant can range in hardness from a gel-like consistency to a hardened rubber depending on the mixing ratios.

QSi was acquired by the CHT Group in August 2017. The partnership is a perfect fit for QSi, and will allow CHT to gain a strong presence in the United States while giving QSi a larger platform on which to boost its business.  CHT is a global company known for specialty chemistry, with headquarters in Tubingen, Germany.
