Description
Chem-Set VST6364 is a 25 mil general purpose acrylic foam tape used as a 3M VHB RP25 alternative for bonding panels, trim, and assemblies without visible fasteners. It’s the thinnest grade in the VST general purpose line and it carries the highest tensile and shear numbers in that group, which makes it the pick when your parts fit well and you want the bond line as tight as possible. Designed for high and medium surface energy materials including PVC, ABS, glass, steel, aluminum, and ceramic. High initial tack means it grabs on contact with no cure time, no mixing, and no dispensing equipment.
Available in gray and white, with identical published performance in both colors. The conformable acrylic foam core absorbs the differential expansion between materials that grow and shrink at different rates, and it damps vibration rather than passing it into the joint. Supplied in 36 yd rolls with a red PE liner, in four widths from 1/4 in to 1 in. Sold by the individual roll with no case minimum, and PFAS and PFOS free per the manufacturer.

What VST6364 Bonds To
VST6364 is designed for high and medium surface energy materials. On these it bonds directly after cleaning, with no primer:
- PVC and ABS, the two the data sheet calls out specifically
- Glass
- Steel, including galvanized and stainless
- Aluminum, including anodized and coated
- Ceramic
- Other high and medium surface energy plastics
Low surface energy plastics and powder coat need either a primer or a different grade. Polypropylene, polyethylene, and similar low surface energy materials will not hold reliably on a clean-and-stick process, and powder coated surfaces are hit or miss depending on the coating. With the correct primer or activator, VST6364 reaches strong adhesion on these as well. If low surface energy plastic or powder coat is your main substrate, the VST 78xx grades are formulated for it and skip the priming step entirely. Porous materials need sealing first. Wood, particleboard, concrete, and masonry do not present a unified surface for the adhesive to flow onto. Seal them before bonding, or use a different fastening method.
At 25 mil, check your fit before you commit. This is the thinnest grade in the general purpose line, so it has the least ability to absorb a bowed panel or a rough surface. If the two faces don’t meet cleanly across the whole bond area, step up to 31 or 47 mil rather than trying to fix it with more pressure.
How Acrylic Foam Tape Bonding Works
Acrylic foam tape does not dry or cure. It builds strength as the adhesive flows into the microscopic texture of the surface, which means the bond you get is decided almost entirely by surface prep, pressure, and dwell time. The steps below are the ones that determine whether the joint holds.
- Get the conditions right. Bring the parts and the tape to at least 65°F before you apply. Below that the adhesive is too firm to flow, and no amount of pressure fixes it. Between 32°F and 65°F, use the VST low temperature grades instead.
- Clean the surface. Fingerprints and light oil come off with an isopropanol wipe. Grease and mold release need a stronger non-polar cleaner first. Use lint free tissue and wipe in one direction so contamination leaves the part instead of moving around on it. Surface test inks will tell you whether the cleaner you’re using is actually working.
- Abrade or prime where the surface calls for it. Mill finish aluminum and stainless benefit from light abrasion followed by a solvent wipe. Painted surfaces, powder coat, and low surface energy plastics need a primer or activator. Apply primer only where the tape lands and wipe the excess immediately.
- Lay the tape, then pull the liner. Apply the tape to one part first, position the assembly, then remove the red liner and mate the parts right away. Once the liner is off, the open face picks up airborne dust fast.
- Apply real pressure. Roll the joint in one direction at 10 to 50 N/cm, around 30 N/cm for most work, at about 24 in/min. Pressure matters more on a thin tape than a thick one, because there is less adhesive available to flow into the surface.
- Let the bond build. Handling strength is immediate thanks to the high initial tack. Full strength develops over about 24 hours at ambient temperature, and warmth speeds it up. Plan shipping and load bearing service around that window rather than loading the joint the same hour it was made.
Joint design matters as much as prep. Design the bond so load runs in shear or tension across the full tape area. Peel and cleavage loads concentrate stress on one edge, and a thin tape has less material to distribute it. When you need more capacity, widen the tape rather than thickening it.
Performance in Production
- 97 lb/in² dynamic shear means a 1 in wide strip across a 3 in bond gives roughly 291 lb of shear capacity before you apply a safety factor. Size the bond area off the load, not off the tape thickness.
- 100 lb/in² normal tensile and 97 lb/in² shear are the highest in the general purpose line, above both the 31 mil and 47 mil grades. Less foam means less compliance in the bond line, and in straight tension and shear that reads as higher strength.
- 19 lb/in peel is the tradeoff. The thicker grades peel harder because the extra foam spreads the load away from the edge, so keep exposed edges out of the design or protect them mechanically.
- The static shear numbers are the ones to design against for hanging loads. It holds 500 g at 200°F for a week, so a joint carrying weight continuously in a hot environment stays put rather than creeping.
- High initial tack grabs on contact, so panels hold position while you work instead of needing clamps or temporary fasteners.
- At 25 mil the bond line stays tight, which matters where a thicker foam would show at a reveal, push a panel out of plane, or interfere with a trim fit.
- The 1/4 in width is the one to reach for on narrow returns and small parts, where a wider strip would run past the flange.
- Bonding rather than spot welding thin gauge material avoids heat distortion, burn-through, and the grinding and refinishing that follows a weld seam.
- The continuous bond line seals as it bonds and puts no dissimilar metal in contact, so there’s no galvanic corrosion path the way there is with a steel fastener through aluminum.
- Test on your own substrate in your own process before you run production. Published values come from lab panels, and surface finish, coating, and cleaning practice all move the result.

Choosing a Thickness in the General Purpose Line
All four grades share the same adhesive and the same core chemistry, so the numbers move in a predictable way. Thinner runs higher in tensile and shear. Thicker runs higher in peel and absorbs more surface irregularity. Pick on how well your parts fit first, then check the load direction.

No, and the difference matters. 5925 is a black tape built on a modified acrylic for medium and lower surface energy surfaces, which is why it works on powder coat and harder plastics. VST6364 is gray or white on a standard acrylic for high and medium surface energy. If you’re replacing 5925, ask us about VST7825, our 25 mil black low surface energy grade, which matches on color, thickness, and chemistry. Swapping 5925 for a standard general purpose tape on a powder coated part is the most common way these bonds fail.
Is grey or gray tape the same thing?
Yes, grey and gray are the same color and the same product. VST6364G is the gray version and VST6364W is white. Both have identical published performance, so choose on appearance at the joint.
Why does the thinner VST6364 have higher shear strength than the thicker grades?
Because the foam core is the compliant part of the bond line. Less foam means less give under a shear or tensile load, so the thin grades report higher numbers on those tests: 97 lb/in² shear at 25 mil against 86 lb/in² at 47 mil. The tradeoff runs the other way on peel, where the thicker grades win because the extra foam spreads the load away from the edge instead of concentrating it. Neither is stronger overall. Match the thickness to how well your parts fit, then check which direction your load actually runs.
Should I use VST6364 at 25 mil or VST6120 at 47 mil?
Start with how well your parts fit. VST6364 at 25 mil needs both faces to meet cleanly across the bond area, and rewards you with a tight bond line and the highest shear and tensile in the line. VST6120 at 47 mil absorbs the bow and surface irregularity you get on real sheet metal and extruded plastic, which is why it’s the volume seller. If you’re unsure, 47 mil is the safer default and 25 mil is the better answer when clearance or appearance is driving the decision.
