Glyptal 1201A insulating enamel is a red alkyd resin coating packaged as a 12.75 oz aerosol spray for fast, even application on coils, armatures, and electrical housings. Originally developed for electrical insulation, the formula resists moisture, oil, acid, heat, dust, and salt spray, which has carried it into plant maintenance, concrete sealing, and general metal protection work well beyond its original use.
Where Glyptal 1201A Insulating Enamel Is Used
Shops apply this alkyd coating as a primer for structural iron and steel, a sealer for concrete floors, and a finish coat for motor, generator, and transformer housings. It also serves as an anti moisture coating on thermostats, water cooler parts, and truck control components, and as a sealer for pipe threads, stud threads, and vacuum systems. The low gloss film hangs onto metal, ceramic, porcelain, concrete, fibers, and wood without lifting, which is why maintenance crews keep a can on hand for quick touch ups between scheduled repaints.
For best film build, apply light, even coats from about 10 to 16 inches away, letting a few minutes pass between passes before building toward a full coat. Shake the can thoroughly before and periodically during use, and apply over clean, dry, grease free metal, ceramic, or wood for proper adhesion. Cold shop temperatures can slow the normal tack time, so plan spray work for a space that stays near room temperature when possible.
How Glyptal 1201A Insulating Enamel Holds Up in Service
The coating meets MIL-E-22118 and is tack free in about 30 minutes at room temperature, with a full cure that can be baked for a smoother finish. Dielectric strength is rated at 1,500 volts per mil, which allows a thinner film than many competing paints while still carrying arc resistance of 480 seconds on air dried film. Continuous service temperature runs to 135°C (275°F), and aging tests show no change in dielectric strength after 3,700 hours at 35°C. Film toughness holds up to abrasion better than high gloss alternatives, a tradeoff for the deliberately low gloss finish that shops accept in exchange for the added durability.
The 1201 family also includes a standard brush and spray grade and a higher viscosity 1201B version built for thread sealing and gasket work in vacuum atmospheres.
