Description

LORD 7545-A/G urethane adhesive is the fastest-setting grade in the LORD 7545 series, mixed 1:1 by volume and supplied here in a 50ml side by side cartridge. It bonds FRP, SMC and other plastics with little surface preparation, and it also bonds primed metals and dissimilar substrate combinations. Mixed, it is a black non-sag paste that stays where you put it on vertical and overhead work. Work time is 1.5 minutes and handling strength comes at 10 minutes, so this is the grade for small parts, tabs, studs and repairs where you want to let go of the part and move on. Country of manufacture is the United States.

Performance in Production

  • Handling strength at 10 minutes means a fixture can be cleared and reused six times an hour, which is the whole reason to pick A/G over the longer-work-time grades.
  • The 1.5 minute work time limits you to one joint per mix. Multi-part layups and long bond lines belong on A/C, A/D, A/E or A/F, where you get 6 to 65 minutes.
  • At 230,000 to 650,000 cP the curative is a heavy paste, so the mixed bead holds its shape on a vertical or overhead surface instead of slumping out of the joint.
  • 70% elongation lets the bond line move with substrates that expand at different rates, which is why urethane handles plastic-to-metal joints that crack a rigid adhesive.
  • Flash point over 200°F on both components exceeds U.S. DOT non-flammability requirements, so no explosion-proof dispensing equipment is needed at the bench.
  • 7545-A resin is moisture sensitive. Leave partial cartridges in the Mylar bag with the desiccant and leave the used mixer in place as a plug between jobs, or the next bead will cure short.
  • Cured adhesive is solvent resistant, and painting and most cleaning processes do not affect bond strength.

Common Applications

  • Bonding tabs, studs, brackets and clips to FRP and SMC parts
  • Sign fabrication and channel letter work, including small bond areas and repairs
  • Small-batch and one-off repairs on fiberglass, composite and plastic parts
  • Truck cap, tonneau cover, running board and toolbox component assembly
  • Cross bonding plastics and composites to primed, painted or e-coated metal
  • Vertical and overhead bonding where the bead has to stay in the joint
  • Bonding HDU urethane foam, wood and engineered plastics in dimensional signage

How to Dispense a 1.5 Minute Urethane Adhesive

A 1.5 minute work time changes how you stage the job. Everything gets laid out before the cartridge goes in the gun, because once material is mixed you are wetting surfaces and mating parts inside 90 seconds. Parker’s instruction is to discard the part if working time is exceeded, since a bead that has started to skin will not wet the mating surface and the bond strength drops.

  • Prep both surfaces first. Plastics and composites get a dry rag wipe or a solvent-dampened rag to pull loose debris and processing fluids. Metals get primed, painted or grit blasted, then solvent washed.
  • Dry-fit the parts and have your clamps, fixture or tape set out and ready before you mix anything.
  • Load the cartridge in a 1:1 50ml manual gun and pull the end caps. Level the plungers by expelling a little material with no mixer installed, until both sides are visibly dispensing.
  • Fit a static mixer with at least 20 elements, which is Parker’s minimum for 50 mL cartridge dispense, and purge a mixer’s length of adhesive to waste.
  • Lay the bead, mate the parts and clamp inside the 1.5 minute work time. Target a 0.010 to 0.040 in bondline. Larger gaps can be filled where mating surfaces are irregular.
  • Leave the part fixtured until 10 minutes at 75°F, then handle. Full strength is 24 hours. Cure can be sped up with modest heat, up to 250°F (121°C).
  • Clean tools with acetone or MEK before the adhesive cures. Do not use alcohol. Cured adhesive softens at 300°F (149°C) and above if parts need to come apart.

Substrates the process runs on: FRP, GRP, SMC, carbon fiber, ABS, polycarbonate, PC/ABS blends, other engineered plastics, HDU urethane foam, wood, and primed, painted, powder-coated or e-coated metals. Glass, non-porous ceramic and stone need LORD AP-134 first. Vulcanized rubber and elastomers need LORD 7701. TPE and TPO need LORD 459X. Bare aluminum and bare steel are not urethane substrates, so prime them or move to an acrylic. Test your own substrate and joint before production.

How Far a 50ml Cartridge Goes

Bead Diameter Linear Feet per 50ml Cartridge
1/8 in (3 mm) 20.7 ft (6.3 m)
1/4 in (6 mm) 5.1 ft (1.55 m)
3/8 in (9.5 mm) 2.3 ft (0.7 m)

Figure a mixer’s length of purge off the top of every cartridge you open. That waste matters more on a 50ml than it does on a 400ml, which is the main reason to move to a larger cartridge once you are running the same joint repeatedly.

LORD 7545 Series Grades Compared

Every grade in the series runs the same 7545-A resin at the same 1:1 volume ratio. The curative letter changes the speed, the mixed color and the cured elasticity, not the chemistry. Parker states the full range of work times all provide the same bond strength, so pick by how long your assembly actually takes.

Grade Mixed Appearance Work Time at 75°F Handling Strength Elongation
7545-A/G (this page) Black paste 1.5 min 10 min 70%
7545-A/B Off-white or black paste 3 to 5 min 30 min 70%
7545-A/C Off-white paste 6 to 8 min 60 min 70%
7545-A/D Off-white or black paste 11 to 18 min 90 min Not published
7545-A/E Off-white paste 22 to 38 min 2 to 3 hr 160%
7545-A/F Off-white paste 45 to 65 min 4 to 5 hr 145%

A/G is the only grade in the series that mixes black and nothing else. B and D are also offered as separate black curatives if you need a dark bond line with more work time. A/E and A/F cure noticeably more elastic than the faster grades, which is worth knowing on long bond lines between substrates that move against each other.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is LORD 7545-A/G used for?

LORD 7545-A/G is a two-part structural urethane adhesive used to bond FRP, SMC and other plastics with minimal surface preparation, plus primed metals and dissimilar substrate combinations. Parker positions it as a general purpose fast bond grade for small jobs, repairs and bonding tabs and studs. Urethane adhesive, polyurethane adhesive and PU adhesive all describe the same chemistry.

What color is LORD 7545-A/G when mixed?

Mixed LORD 7545-A/G is black. The 7545-A resin is a brown paste and the 7545-G curative is a black paste, and the mixed bead is a black non-sag paste. This is worth checking before you order, because most other grades in the 7545 family mix off-white. If the bond line will be visible and unpainted, look at 7545-A/C or 7545-A/E instead.

How much working time does LORD 7545-A/G give you?

1.5 minutes at 75°F (24°C). That is the window to lay the bead, mate the parts and clamp. Handling strength comes at 10 minutes and full cure is 24 hours. The 10 minute figure sometimes gets described as a 10 minute cure time in sales literature, but it is the fixture point, not full strength.

What gun and mixing tip does the 50ml cartridge need?

A 1:1 manual gun sized for 50ml side by side cartridges, fitted with a static mixer of at least 20 elements. Parker specifies the 20 element minimum for 50 mL cartridge dispense in the 7545 series application notes. Call us at (800) 220-1966 if you want the mixer matched to your gun.

What surface prep does LORD 7545-A/G need?

Plastics need a dry rag wipe or a solvent-dampened rag to remove loose debris and processing fluids. Metals should be primed or grit blasted and then solvent washed for optimum bond performance. Glass, non-porous ceramic and stone need LORD AP-134 first, vulcanized rubber needs LORD 7701, and TPE and TPO need LORD 459X. Parker notes plasma treatment can help on hard-to-bond materials in special cases.

Is LORD 7545-A/G flammable?

No. Both components have a closed cup flash point over 200°F (93°C), which exceeds U.S. DOT requirements for non-flammability, and explosion-proof dispensing equipment is not required. Read the SDS and label for full handling and safe use instructions before you run it.

What is the shelf life, and how should the cartridge be stored?

8 months from date of manufacture in the original unopened container stored at 65 to 85°F (18 to 30°C). The resin is moisture sensitive, so keep cartridges in the Mylar bag with the desiccant until you need them, and protect a partial cartridge by leaving the used mixer in place as a seal. Run inventory first in, first out.

How does LORD 7545-A/G compare to the other LORD 7545 curatives?

A/G is the fastest, at 1.5 minutes work time and 10 minutes to handling strength. The rest of the family runs the same 7545-A resin at the same 1:1 ratio and only changes speed, mixed color and cured elasticity. The grade comparison table above lays out all six side by side.
