Description

Permabond 947 is a low odor cyanoacrylate adhesive built for shops and production lines where fogging and strong fumes slow the work down. This alkoxyethyl cyanoacrylate cures without the white haze that forms around bondlines on hot, humid days with standard instant adhesives, so parts stay clean and inspection ready straight off the line.

Why low odor cyanoacrylate matters on the shop floor

Standard cyanoacrylates release enough vapor to fog nearby surfaces and irritate operators working close to the bondline for a full shift. Permabond 947 cuts that problem at the source. The reduced odor formulation improves comfort at the workstation, and because it does not fog, parts near the bond keep their finish instead of picking up a hazy film that needs wiping or rework.

Viscosity and fixture time by substrate

At 900 to 1,500 mPa.s (25°C), Permabond 947 runs thicker than general purpose cyanoacrylates, which helps it stay in the joint instead of wicking away on vertical or gap filling applications. Fixture time, meaning the time to reach 0.3 N/mm² shear strength, varies by substrate.

Substrate Fixture Time
PVC, phenolic resin, ABS 10 to 15 seconds
Neoprene / NBR rubber 2 to 5 seconds
Aluminum 10 to 15 seconds
Steel 20 to 30 seconds
Zinc 30 to 40 seconds

Where this low odor cyanoacrylate fits

Permabond 947 bonds most common shop materials without mixing or heat cure, which keeps assembly lines moving. It is 100 percent reactive with no solvents to flash off, so there is no cure shrinkage from evaporation. Expect roughly one year of shelf life at full performance when the bottle stays refrigerated, which matters for shops that buy in bulk to cover a production run.

Handling and storage notes

Keep Permabond 947 refrigerated when it is not in active use to protect working life. Bring the bottle to room temperature before opening to avoid moisture condensation inside the cap, the most common cause of premature thickening in stored cyanoacrylate adhesives. Use fume extraction or a ventilated workspace even with a low odor formulation, since cyanoacrylate vapor can still cause eye irritation in an enclosed room.

Choosing between Permabond 947 and thinner cyanoacrylates

Not every bonding job calls for a thicker adhesive. Thin, water like CA grades wick into tight, well mated joints fast but run off vertical surfaces and cannot bridge a gap. Permabond 947’s higher viscosity holds its shape on uneven or porous substrates and in joints with a visible gap, at the cost of a slightly longer fixture time versus a thin bodied CA. For production runs bonding painted or coated metal parts, where a visible fog would mean rework, the odor and fogging control is often the deciding factor over raw bonding speed.
