Description

The SpecialInsert Deform-Nut TC/INT cross nut is a threaded rivet nut built for sheet applications where drilling a full-depth tapped hole is not practical. It threads at 1/4-20 and installs from one side of the panel, leaving the far side clean and unobstructed.

Where the cross nut is used

This fastener is rated for metal sheet and for sheet stock that is not metal, which makes it a fit for enclosures, panels, and light equipment housings where a captured thread needs to go into thin material rather than a solid casting. The pre-bulbed body seats into a drilled hole and expands to lock in place, so the joint does not rely on the base material holding its own threads.

Installing the cross nut

Assembly calls for a special hand or pneumatic setting tool made for the Deform-Nut line. The tool draws the mandrel through the body, which deforms the sleeve against the back side of the panel and clamps it in position. Once set, a standard 1/4-20 bolt or screw threads in from the front, and the joint can be assembled and disassembled repeatedly without damaging the sheet. Because the part carries its own internal thread, the panel material itself never has to hold a tapped hole, which matters on thin gauge stock where a directly tapped thread would strip after a handful of cycles. That also means the same setting tool and thread size can move between jobs without re-qualifying the base material each time.
