Glyptal 1201 insulating varnish is a red alkyd resin enamel packaged in a 1 gallon pail for brush, spray, or dip application on coils, armatures, and other electrical components. The corrosion and moisture resistant formula was developed for electrical insulation and has carried into general plant maintenance, motor and transformer housings, and pipe thread sealing.
Where Glyptal 1201 Insulating Varnish Is Used
Maintenance crews brush or spray this alkyd enamel onto coil and armature windings, motor and generator housings, and transformer casings for electrical insulation. It also works as an anti moisture coating for thermostats, water cooler parts, and truck control components, and as a sealer for pipe threads, stud threads, and vacuum system joints. The low gloss red film adheres to metal, ceramic, porcelain, concrete, fiber, and wood surfaces, which keeps it in rotation for plant maintenance well past its original electrical use.
The 1 gallon pail suits production runs, equipment overhauls, and larger maintenance jobs where the 12.75 oz aerosol would run out quickly. Thin the varnish with a compatible reducer for spray equipment, or apply directly by brush for touch up work and smaller components. Clean, dry, grease free surfaces give the best adhesion regardless of application method, and a light first coat helps the varnish key into porous substrates like concrete before a heavier finish coat.
How Glyptal 1201 Insulating Varnish Holds Up in Service
The varnish meets MIL-E-22118 and becomes tack free in about 30 minutes at room temperature, with a bake option for a smoother finish. Dielectric strength is rated at 1,500 volts per mil, supporting a thinner coat than many competing enamels, and arc resistance on air dried film runs 480 seconds. Continuous service temperature reaches 135°C (275°F), and laboratory aging shows no change in dielectric strength after 3,700 hours at 35°C. The low gloss finish trades shine for better abrasion resistance than high gloss alternatives, a tradeoff most maintenance shops accept for the added service life.
