Description
Chem-Set VST7825 is a 25 mil primerless acrylic foam tape for polypropylene, polyethylene, and other low surface energy plastics, plus powder coated surfaces, clearcoats, and ceramic car paints. The adhesive is formulated to bond those surfaces with no primer, no flame treatment, and no surface modification. Clean the part and stick it.
That matters because standard acrylic foam tape does not hold on polypropylene or polyethylene at all without help, and it’s unpredictable on powder coat depending on the coating chemistry. The usual workaround is a general purpose tape plus a primer, which adds a step, a wipe-off, and a variable to your process. VST7825 removes it. Available in black, gray, and white on a highly conformable foam core with a red PE liner.

Peel Strength Depends Heavily on What You Bond
Most tape data sheets publish a single peel number tested on stainless steel. This one publishes three, because the whole point of an LSE tape is what it does on the hard substrates, and the spread is large enough that you need to design around it.
| Substrate | 90° Peel | What That Means on the Floor |
|---|---|---|
| ABS | 22 lb/in | Strong. On par with the general purpose grades on their best substrates. |
| Stainless steel | 14 lb/in | Solid, but a general purpose grade peels harder on bare metal. Use this one for the plastics. |
| Polypropylene | 8 lb/in | Real adhesion with no primer, which standard tape cannot do at all. Keep the load in shear and widen the tape. |
Read that as design guidance, not a warning. Eight pounds per inch on untreated polypropylene is a genuinely useful number when the alternative is zero. But it’s a third of what you get on ABS, so on a polyolefin part keep the joint loaded in shear or tension, avoid exposed edges that can be picked at, and get the bond area from width rather than expecting peel to carry it.
What VST7825 Bonds To
- Polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE), untreated
- Thermoplastic olefins (TPO) and thermoplastic elastomers (TPE)
- ABS and other medium surface energy plastics
- Powder coated surfaces
- Clearcoats and ceramic car paints
- Stainless steel and other high surface energy metals
Powder coat still needs a test. Powder coating chemistry varies enough that it lands anywhere from medium to low surface energy depending on the formulation, and no tape data sheet can tell you which one you have. This grade is the right starting point and it will handle most of them, but bond a sample and pull it before you commit a production run.
Porous materials still need sealing. Wood, particleboard, concrete, and masonry do not give the adhesive a unified surface to flow onto, and being primerless does not change that.
The Tradeoff: Temperature
The adhesive chemistry that makes this tape bond polyolefins without a primer costs you temperature at the top end. Worth knowing before you spec it.
| Property | VST7825 (LSE) | VST6364 (general purpose) |
|---|---|---|
| Long term service | 176°F | 212°F |
| Short term service | 212°F | 320°F |
| Static shear at 200°F | not rated | 500 g |
| Bonds untreated PP and PE | Yes, no primer | Only with a primer |
Where that bites: a dark exterior panel in direct sun can run well past 176°F on the surface, and anything that passes through a paint bake or a powder coat oven after bonding is out of range. If your part needs both LSE adhesion and high temperature, call us. That’s a different conversation and possibly a different product.
How to Apply It
- Clean, but skip the primer. Fingerprints and light oil come off with an isopropanol wipe. Grease and mold release need a stronger non-polar cleaner first, and mold release is the thing that most often defeats a bond on a molded polyolefin part because it’s invisible. Wipe in one direction with lint free tissue. Surface test inks will tell you whether your cleaner is actually working.
- Bring the parts to 65°F or warmer. Below that the adhesive is too firm to flow into the surface. Between 32°F and 65°F use the VST low temperature grades, though note those are general purpose and will not bond polyolefins.
- Lay the tape, then pull the liner. Apply to one part first, position the assembly, then remove the red liner and mate the parts immediately.
- Roll it at 10 to 50 N/cm, around 30 N/cm for most work, at about 24 in/min in one direction. Pressure is what pushes the adhesive into the surface. This matters more on a low surface energy plastic than anywhere else, because the adhesive is already fighting the substrate.
- Let it build. Handling strength is immediate. Full strength develops over about 24 hours at ambient, and warmth speeds it up. Plan handling and load bearing service around that window.
Design the joint for shear. That goes double here. On polypropylene at 8 lb/in peel, an exposed edge under load is where the failure starts. Keep the load in shear or tension across the full tape area, and widen the tape rather than thickening it when you need more capacity.
Common Applications
- Trailer and specialty vehicle: TPO and TPE body cladding, polypropylene interior panels, badge and applique mounting on painted and clearcoated surfaces
- Metal fabrication: bonding to powder coated enclosures, cabinets, and machine guarding after the coating process
- Sign and display: attaching trim and hardware to powder coated cabinets and raceways, polypropylene and polyethylene sign components
- Automotive and aftermarket: trim, moldings, and emblems on clearcoats and ceramic car paints
- General manufacturing: polypropylene and polyethylene housings, TPO enclosures, agricultural and equipment panels
- Replacing a general purpose tape plus primer wherever you want to take the priming step out of the process
Working From a 3M Part Number
Two 3M families cover this space and VST7825 crosses to both at this thickness. All three are 0.6 mm.
| If You Use | Color | Built For | Chem-Set Match |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3M LSE-060WF | White | Polyolefins: PP, TPE, TPO | VST7825W |
| 3M VHB 5925 | Black | Powder coat and medium to lower surface energy | VST7825B |
| 3M VHB 5925WF | White | Powder coat and medium to lower surface energy | VST7825W |
A cross reference is a starting point for selection, not a statement that two products perform the same. One difference to plan for: both 3M grades carry a higher temperature rating, 200°F long term against our 176°F. Read both data sheets and qualify the tape in your own joint before changing a production process. Working from a different 3M number? Call us, the full cross reference covers the other LSE thicknesses.
Available Sizes and How to Order
| Width | Actual Slit Width | Roll | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2 in | 12 mm | 36 yd | Narrow flanges, trim, badges |
| 3/4 in | 18 mm | 36 yd | General panel and trim work |
| 1 in | 24 mm | 36 yd | More bond area. The one to reach for on polyolefins. |
| 900 mm log roll | 900 mm | 36 yd | Converting and die-cutting. Slit it yourself. |
Note the actual slit widths are metric, so a 1/2 in roll is 12 mm rather than 12.7 mm. If you’re running this on automated equipment or die-cutting to a tolerance, work from the metric figure.
This grade is a special order, not a stock item. Lead time runs 5 to 10 days, it ships in case quantities, and special order material cannot be cancelled or returned once it’s placed. Volume pricing kicks in at 144 and 360 rolls. Before you order, call (800) 220-1966 and we’ll confirm the case quantity for the width and color you need, check current lead time, and get you a sample to test first. On a primerless LSE bond, testing before you commit to a non-returnable case is worth the extra week.
Custom slit widths from 4 mm up to 250 mm and 72 yd rolls are available on the same special order basis.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will tape stick to polypropylene?
Standard acrylic foam tape will not, not reliably. Polypropylene has such low surface energy that the adhesive beads up instead of flowing onto it, which is why a general purpose tape either needs a primer, a flame treatment, or a corona treatment first. VST7825 is formulated for it and bonds untreated PP with no surface modification, at 8 lb/in peel adhesion. That’s lower than the 22 lb/in it gets on ABS, so keep the joint loaded in shear rather than peel and get your capacity from bond area.
Will tape stick to powder coat?
Sometimes, and this is the grade to try. Powder coating chemistry varies enough that it lands anywhere from medium to low surface energy depending on the formulation, so no data sheet can promise it and a general purpose tape is a coin flip. VST7825 is formulated for powder coatings, clearcoats, and ceramic car paints, and it handles most of them without a primer. Bond a sample of your actual coated part and pull it before you commit a production run.
What does primerless actually mean?
It means you clean the part and stick the tape, with no separate adhesion promoter step. Bonding a low surface energy plastic with standard tape normally requires wiping on a primer, letting it flash off, keeping it only where the tape lands, and cleaning the excess immediately. That’s a step, a consumable, a timing window, and one more thing to get wrong. Primerless removes it. You still have to clean the surface properly, and on molded parts that means dealing with mold release, which is invisible and is the most common cause of a failed bond.
Can VST7825 replace 3M LSE-060WF or 3M VHB 5925?
VST7825 is the closest Chem-Set match to both. All three are 0.6 mm acrylic foam tapes formulated for medium and low surface energy substrates: LSE-060WF for polyolefins in white, 5925 for powder coat and lower surface energy in black or white. VST7825 comes in black, gray, and white. It is not a 3M approved substitution and the manufacturers do not publish identical test conditions. One difference to plan for: both 3M grades are rated to 200°F long term against our 176°F. Call us for a sample and test it in your joint.
Should I use the LSE grade or a general purpose grade with a primer?
Use the LSE grade if the low surface energy substrate is the main thing you’re bonding, if you want the priming step out of your process, or if you’re bonding after a powder coat. Use a general purpose grade with a primer if you need the higher temperature rating, if you’re mostly bonding metals and only occasionally hit a plastic, or if you need a stock item today rather than a 5 to 10 day special order. VST6364 at the same 25 mil thickness holds to 212°F continuous against 176°F here, and it stocks.
What is the difference between the black, gray, and white versions?
Color only, as far as the published data goes. VST7825B, VST7825G, and VST7825W share the same construction, thickness, adhesive, and performance figures. Pick on appearance at the joint: black for dark panels and automotive trim, white for light colored parts, gray for everything in between. Note that gray and grey are the same thing.
How hot can it get in service?
176°F (80°C) continuous and 212°F (100°C) short term, with a -40°F floor. That’s lower than the general purpose VST grades at 212°F and 320°F, and it’s the tradeoff for primerless LSE adhesion. Two places it matters: a dark exterior panel in direct sun can exceed 176°F at the surface, and anything that goes through a paint bake or powder coat oven after bonding is out of range. If you need both LSE adhesion and high temperature, call us.
How do I order it and what is the lead time?
VST7825 is a special order rather than a stock item. Lead time runs 5 to 10 days, it ships in case quantities, and special order material cannot be cancelled or returned once placed. Call (800) 220-1966 before you order and we’ll confirm the case quantity for your width and color, check current lead time, and send a sample to test first. On a primerless LSE bond, proving it on your substrate before committing to a non-returnable case is worth the week.
