Description
VST 7847 Tape is a double-coated, viscoelastic acrylic foam tape for bonding many low-surface-energy plastics, coated metals, glass, ceramics, and other prepared substrates. The 47 mil foam core conforms to small surface irregularities, while high initial tack helps parts stay positioned during assembly. Black, gray, and white constructions are available with a red polyethylene release liner.
Where VST 7847 Tape Fits the Assembly
This tape is intended for demanding attachment work on materials that can be difficult to bond with general-purpose foam tape. Typical substrate families include polypropylene, polyethylene, HDPE, powder-coated metal, coated glass, ceramics, ASA, ABS, EPDM, and POM. It can replace visible rivets, screws, and weld marks in qualified assemblies, which makes it useful for signs, transportation panels, appliance trim, architectural details, and fabricated displays. A bonded joint also spreads stress across the contact area instead of concentrating it at drilled holes.
Material names alone do not guarantee adhesion. Mold release, plasticizers, texture, paint chemistry, contamination, temperature, load direction, and service exposure all affect the result. Test representative production parts before release, especially when the joint will carry sustained peel load, face outdoor weather, or bond a very low-energy polymer. Surface Preparation and Application
Start with clean, dry surfaces. Remove dust, oil, moisture, processing residue, and loose coatings with a cleaner that is compatible with both substrates. Apply the tape without stretching it, keep the adhesive away from fingers and shop debris, and use firm, even pressure across the full bond area. Pressure helps the acrylic adhesive wet the surface and develop intimate contact. Avoid seams, bubbles, or gaps that can start a peel edge.
Assemble parts at a temperature that supports wet-out, then allow bond strength to build before applying full service load. Rounded corners and protected tape edges can help on parts exposed to handling. The foam core accommodates minor mismatch, but it is not a substitute for flat mating surfaces or a joint designed for the expected load. Use mechanical support during evaluation when a falling part could damage equipment or injure someone.
