Description

Chem-Set 6105 is a two-part, 1:1 toughened acrylic adhesive for HDPE, King StarBoard, polypropylene, and polyethylene that needs no primer and no flame, plasma, or corona treatment.

HDPE, polypropylene, and polyethylene have low surface energy, so most adhesives do not wet out on them without a surface treatment or primer. 6105 skips that step. It also bonds metals, composites, EPDM rubber, and nylon, so it works on dissimilar joints such as HDPE sheet to aluminum.

It is used in boat building and marine fabrication, and King Plastic lists it among the adhesives to use on King StarBoard when bonding is necessary. It comes in 50ml and 400ml cartridges, and each cartridge includes a mixing nozzle.

Performance in Production

  • Short pot life means you mix through the nozzle and assemble the joint right away. Plan long seams in sections.
  • Fixture and handling strength arrive in minutes, so you can clamp, move the part, and keep the line running. Hold pressure until handling strength is reached.
  • Temperature affects cure speed. The TDS gives its cure times at 23°C, so check your schedule if the shop runs colder or warmer.
  • The TDS reports substrate failure on polypropylene, polyethylene, ABS, polycarbonate, PVC, and EPDM. In those tests the plastic gave way before the adhesive did.
  • HDPE carries the highest lap shear value in the table, 15 N/mm² (2,175 psi). Surface and prep affect results, so test on your own HDPE or StarBoard grade.
  • Microparticles in the adhesive control the gap, which helps hold a consistent bond line up to 1 mm (0.04 in).
  • The TDS lists good impact strength and good chemical resistance. It does not list individual chemicals, so test against your own cleaners and fluids before production.
  • Brief higher-temperature exposure such as paint baking or wave soldering is possible when the joint is not stressed. Strength falls as temperature rises, as shown on the Hot Strength curve in the TDS.

Common Applications

  • King StarBoard and other HDPE sheet bonded to aluminum, plastics, and other materials
  • Polypropylene and polyethylene parts bonded to metals and composites
  • Boat building and marine fabrication using HDPE sheet
  • EPDM rubber and nylon (PA6) bonding
  • Dissimilar-material joints such as plastic to metal or plastic to composite
  • ABS, polycarbonate, and PVC parts, with lap shear values listed above
  • Fabrication and repair jobs where a flame, plasma, or corona treatment step is not wanted

Alternative to 3M Scotch-Weld DP8005 and DP8010

Chem-Set 6105 is offered as an alternative to 3M Scotch-Weld DP8005 and DP8010 for bonding low surface energy plastics. They are different products, so mix ratio and cure profile are not identical. Chem-Set 6105 mixes 1:1 and runs in 1:1 cartridge guns. Confirm fit on your parts before you change a process.

Related Products

Chem-Set 6105 and Chem-Set 6110 use the same guns and mixing tips.

How to Bond HDPE, Polypropylene, and Polyethylene Without Flame Treatment

Chem-Set 6105 replaces the flame, plasma, corona, or primer step with a clean, dry, grease-free surface. The shop steps are:

  1. Clean the surfaces. Polyolefin parts can carry traces of mold release. Wipe with isopropanol (IPA) and let it evaporate fully before bonding.
  2. Prep metal if you are bonding to it. Aluminum, copper, and copper alloys benefit from light abrasion with emery cloth or similar to remove the oxide layer.
  3. Load the cartridge and fit a mixing nozzle. The 50ml and 400ml cartridges use different guns and tips, listed under Related Products above.
  4. Apply a thin bead of adhesive mixed through the static mixer nozzle. Pot life is short, so bring the parts together right away.
  5. Assemble the parts and clamp.
  6. Hold pressure until handling strength is reached. The time depends on the joint design and the surfaces being bonded.
  7. Allow 24 hours at 23°C for full cure. Excess adhesive outside a closed joint cures more slowly and may stay soft from air contact. Adhesive inside the joint cures solid.

The process runs on polypropylene, polyethylene and HDPE, aluminum, ABS, polycarbonate, PVC, EPDM, and nylon (PA6). PTFE bonds at a lower strength, so test it or call us before you specify.

Check compatibility on your own substrate. The TDS notes that 6105 may affect some thermoplastics and is not recommended in contact with strong oxidizing materials. Storage temperature is in the table above. If the product separates slightly in storage, invert the container to redisperse it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What adhesive bonds King StarBoard and HDPE without flame treatment?

Chem-Set 6105 is a 1:1 toughened acrylic developed to bond HDPE, polypropylene, and polyethylene with no primer or surface treatment. Polyolefin bonder, LSE plastic adhesive, and polyolefin adhesive all describe the same type of product.

King Plastic names Chem-Set 6105 Polyolefin Bonder among the adhesives to use on King StarBoard when an adhesive is necessary. King prefers mechanical fastening or welding where those fit and does not represent the product. See King Plastic’s StarBoard adhesive guidance.

Is Chem-Set 6105 an alternative to 3M Scotch-Weld DP8005 or DP8010?

Chem-Set 6105 is offered as an alternative to 3M Scotch-Weld DP8005 and DP8010 for bonding low surface energy plastics with no primer or surface treatment. It is a different product, so mix ratio and cure speed are not identical. 6105 mixes 1:1 and runs in 1:1 cartridge guns. Test on your parts before you change a process.

Do I need to flame treat, plasma treat, or prime HDPE before using Chem-Set 6105?

No. Chem-Set 6105 is developed to bond HDPE, polypropylene, and polyethylene with no primer or surface treatment. The surfaces still need to be clean, dry, and grease-free. Wipe polyolefin parts with isopropanol and let it evaporate fully, since mold release can leave a residue. Light abrasion helps on aluminum, copper, and copper alloys.

What other materials does Chem-Set 6105 bond?

Chem-Set 6105 bonds polypropylene, polyethylene, aluminum, ABS, polycarbonate, PVC, EPDM, and nylon (PA6), and it suits metals, composites, and dissimilar joints. The shear strength table above lists values for each. PTFE is lower, so test it or call us before you specify. For a substrate that is not in the table, call (800) 220-1966.

Can I use Chem-Set 6105 on a boat?

Boat builders and fabricators use Chem-Set 6105 to bond King StarBoard and other HDPE, and Power & Motoryacht covered it in a Tip of the Month on bonding King StarBoard. The TDS does not give a water, salt, or UV rating, so test your assembly in its service conditions or call us to talk through the application.

What is the difference between Chem-Set 6105 and Chem-Set 6110?

6105 is the faster-setting grade. Both are 1:1 toughened acrylic polyolefin bonders, but 6105 has the shorter pot life, fixture time, handling time, and working strength, as shown in the comparison table above. Chem-Set 6110 gives you more open time. They use the same guns and mixing tips.

What gun and mixing tip do I need for Chem-Set 6105?

The 50ml cartridge runs in a 50ml 1:1 dispensing gun, and the 400ml cartridge runs in a 400ml manual or pneumatic gun. Each cartridge includes one mixing nozzle. Extra tips and the guns we carry for each size are listed under Related Products above.

How long does Chem-Set 6105 take to cure?

Chem-Set 6105 reaches full cure in 24 hours at 23°C. Pot life is short, and fixture and handling strength arrive in minutes, as shown in the table above. Cure times are given at 23°C, and higher or lower temperatures may affect cure speed.
