Description

This 20 gram (0.70 oz) bottle of Pacer E-40 is the bench and repair size of Pacer’s low viscosity ethyl cyanoacrylate, 30 to 70 cP with .004 in gap capability. E-40 carries the highest tensile and impact figures in the E Series, 4700 psi on steel and 7 to 10 ft-lbs, so this is the bottle to keep at a station where parts get handled or take a knock in service. It’s the size for rework cells, service work, prototype builds, or a line that goes through a bottle over weeks rather than days, and it dispenses straight from the bottle with no gun and no mixer.

Choosing the 20 Gram Over the 1 lb

E-40 comes in two sizes and the decision is about consumption rate, not cost per gram.

  • The 20 gram is a working bottle. It goes to the bench, the tech uses it, it goes back in the drawer.
  • The 1 lb holds 453 g, about 23 times as much, and it works as a bulk container you draw from rather than carry around.
  • Cyanoacrylate cure is driven by moisture, and humidity in the headspace of a partly used bottle works against you over time. Pacer’s one year shelf life is stated for unopened material, so the size that finishes before it degrades is the size that costs you least.
  • If you go through a 20 gram in under a week, you’re buying the wrong size and the 1 lb is the move.
  • If a 20 gram lasts you a month or more, stay here. Smaller bottles also let you stock two or three viscosities without committing to bulk on any of them.

Performance in Production

  • Dispenses straight from the bottle. No gun, no static mixer, no mixing station, so a bond can happen anywhere a tech can stand.
  • 4700 psi tensile on steel and 7 to 10 ft-lbs impact, both the highest in the E Series. On a repair that has to survive handling, that’s the difference between this grade and the general purpose one.
  • One free-falling drop covers about one square inch of bond area, so 20 grams goes further than the size suggests on small parts and detail work.
  • .004 in gap capability covers ordinary machined and molded fit-up without needing the near-perfect tolerances a wicking grade demands.
  • Fixture in 1 to 5 minutes and 80% of strength in 15 to 30 minutes means a repair goes back into service the same shift.
  • At 30 to 70 cP this still flows. It will run on a vertical or overhead face before it sets, so hold the part flat or clamp it.
  • Keep the tip clean and the cap on. A CA bottle that clogs is almost always a bottle that sat open, not a bad bottle.

Pick by how fast you go through it, since an opened CA bottle is working against ambient humidity from the day you break the seal.

Is Pacer E-40 stronger than E-100?

On the published numbers, yes. E-40 gives 4700 psi tensile on steel against E-100’s 4000, 7 to 10 ft-lbs impact against 3 to 5, and 2700 psi tensile shear on steel against 2400. The tradeoff is gap: E-40 fills .004 in and E-100 fills .005 in, so if your parts are loose, E-100 in a properly filled joint will outperform E-40 in a starved one. Match the grade to the fit-up first.

Will Pacer E-40 run on a vertical surface?

Yes. At 30 to 70 cP this is a low viscosity liquid and it will run down a vertical or overhead face before it cures. Hold the part flat, clamp it, mist with a Pacer accelerator to set the surface, or move to E-1500. For a joint where the adhesive cannot move at all, RX-50M Gel is a true gel.

Does Pacer E-40 need to be refrigerated?

Pacer recommends refrigerating unopened bottles at 40F (4C) for optimum results, then letting the adhesive come up to room temperature before opening. Opening a cold bottle draws condensation into the material. Once opened, store in a cool, dry location. It is not a requirement, it is what gets you the full stated shelf life.
