Chem-Set 605 Quick Set Acrylic Adhesive

Description

Chem-Set 605 is a toughened two-part methacrylate (MMA) structural adhesive that produces load-bearing bonds to engineered plastics, metals, and composites. It mixes 1:1, cures at room temperature, and dispenses as a non-sagging gel that holds position on vertical and overhead work. Minimal surface preparation is required, and it bonds poorly prepared surfaces and dissimilar materials where outdoor weathering or solvent exposure is expected. Available in natural, previously sold as clear, and in white.

Choosing Your Version

Natural is unpigmented and mixes to a natural tone, not a clear or colorless bond line. Choose white where the bond line will be visible against a light-colored substrate.

Working time also differs. White is the fastest at 2 to 3 minutes. Natural gives you 3 to 6 minutes. Pick by bond line appearance first, then by how long you need to position the part.

Substrate lists vary slightly between versions. Confirm against the data sheet for the version you order, and test in your own service conditions before committing to production.

Surface Preparation

Solvent-wipe grease, oil, dirt, and other contaminants. Vapor phase degreasers and hot aqueous baths also work. On metal, abrading or roughening the surface increases bond strength. On aluminum and stainless, a metal conditioner improves overlap shear meaningfully and is worth the extra step on structural joints.

Working Notes

• Bond line thickness of 0.015 to 0.030 in gives optimum adhesion. Thicker is not stronger.
• Apply firm pressure between the parts. A small fillet squeezing out the edges confirms adequate gap fill.
• After the working time expires, leave the parts undisturbed until fixture time is reached. Moving them in between costs bond strength.
• Working times are short on all versions and shortest on the white. Dispense only what you can place.
• Natural tone and flexibility vary slightly by size. Where bond line appearance or elongation is critical, request a sample or confirm the data sheet for the size you are ordering.
• Do not mix large masses at once. The exotherm generates significant heat and can release entrapped air and volatile gas.
• Apply between 65°F and 85°F. Colder slows the cure, hotter speeds it up, and both affect component viscosity and dispensing.
• Clean up before the adhesive cures. Soap and water works, as do citrus terpene or NMP-based cleaners. Cured material has to be scraped.
• Withstands processing forces once cured. Do not drop, shock load, or heavily load.
• Intermittent exposure above 250°F does not reduce performance.
• Non-sagging gel holds position on vertical and overhead bond lines.
