Permabond TA4605 Overview

Permabond TA4605 is a two-part, 1:1 toughened structural acrylic (MMA) adhesive that bonds untreated low surface energy plastics including polypropylene, polyethylene (HDPE, LDPE, UHMW) and PTFE. No flame, corona, plasma or primer treatment is required before bonding.

TA4605 is the fast-set grade in the TA4600 series. It fixtures in 5 to 10 minutes and reaches working strength in 2 to 4 hours, which suits production assembly and repair work where parts need to move off the bench quickly. It contains microparticles that control bond line thickness and support gaps up to 1 mm.

Both parts are methacrylate based, solvent free, and non-hazardous for transport. TA4605 also bonds polyolefins to dissimilar substrates including metals, composites, and e-coated metals.

Which TA4600 Grade Do You Need?

All four grades bond the same difficult plastics. The choice comes down to how fast you need to fixture, how large the assembly is, and how much gap the joint has.

Choose TA4605 when fixture speed is the priority and the joint has a measurable gap. Move to TA4610 if the assembly is large enough that 5 to 10 minutes is not enough working time. Nature of surface, surface preparation, glue line thickness, substrate thickness, pull speed, batch variation, cure time and temperature all affect shear strength measurement. Values are guideline figures, not a specification. The TA4605 data sheet does not publish mild steel or stainless steel values. If you are bonding polyolefin to steel, TA4611 and TA4631 publish steel figures.

Performance in Production

  • Fixture in 5 to 10 minutes supports high-throughput assembly and short-cycle repair work. This is the fastest fixture time in the TA4600 series.
  • Pot life of 2 to 4 minutes is short. Dispense through a static mixer and assemble promptly rather than pre-mixing a batch.
  • Part A is a thixotropic paste, which helps the bead stay where it is placed on vertical and overhead joints.
  • Microparticles hold a controlled bond line and support gaps up to 1 mm. For tight-fitting parts where any standoff is a problem, use TA4611 or TA4631 instead.
  • 1:1 mix ratio works with manual cartridge guns, pneumatic guns, and automated meter-mix equipment.
  • Maintain clamp pressure until handling strength is reached. Time varies with joint design and substrates.
  • Adhesive squeezed outside a closed joint cures more slowly and may feel soft due to air contact. Material inside the joint cures solid.
  • TA4605 can take brief high-temperature excursions such as paint baking and wave soldering provided the joint is not unduly stressed.
  • Not recommended in contact with strong oxidizing materials. May affect some thermoplastics, so check substrate compatibility before production.

Surface Preparation

  • Surfaces must be clean, dry and grease-free before bonding.
  • Molded polyolefin parts often carry residual mold release. Wipe with isopropanol (IPA) and let it fully evaporate before applying adhesive.
  • On metals, aluminium and copper alloys benefit from light abrasion with emery cloth to remove the oxide layer.
  • No primer, flame, corona or plasma treatment is required on the polyolefin side. That is the point of the TA4600 series.

Directions for Use

  • Confirm surfaces are clean, dry and grease-free.
  • Apply a thin bead of adhesive pre-mixed through a static mixer nozzle.
  • Assemble components and clamp.
  • Maintain pressure until handling strength is achieved. Time varies with joint design and the surfaces being bonded.
  • Allow 24 hours at 23°C for full cure.

Sizes and Matching Dispensing Equipment

TA4605 cartridges need a matching 1:1 mixer and gun. Ordering the wrong mixer is the most common reason a first trial fails, so use this table to match the package to the hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to flame, corona or plasma treat the plastic first?

No. The TA4600 series was developed specifically to bond untreated polyolefin surfaces. No primer or pre-treatment is required. Surfaces still need to be clean, dry and grease-free, and molded parts should be wiped with IPA to remove mold release.

What is the difference between TA4605 and TA4610?

Speed. TA4605 fixtures in 5 to 10 minutes and fully cures in 24 hours. TA4610 fixtures in 12 to 15 minutes and fully cures in 48 hours, which gives more working time on large or complex assemblies. Both contain microparticles and handle gaps up to 1 mm.

Will TA4605 bond PTFE?

Yes, at 1.5 N/mm² (220 psi) shear. That is a real bond on a material that is non-stick by design, but it is the lowest PTFE figure in the TA4600 series. If PTFE is the critical joint, TA4610, TA4611 and TA4631 publish higher values.

Does TA4605 bond rubber?

Yes. The TA4600 series bonds EPDM, nitrile, neoprene and butyl rubbers. EPDM contains polypropylene, which is why the polyolefin chemistry works on it. It does not bond silicone rubber.

Can TA4605 be used underwater?

The TA4605 data sheet does not list underwater bonding. TA4610 and TA4631 both list bonding underwater and water resistance as published features. Use one of those for submerged or wet-service joints.

How much working time do I have after dispensing?

Pot life is 2 to 4 minutes at 23°C. Dispense through the static mixer and get parts together and clamped inside that window. If your assembly takes longer than that to position, step up to TA4610.

What quantity do I have to order?

Whatever you need. There is no order minimum on any TA4600 series item. Buy a single cartridge for a trial or full cases for production.

Is TA4605 hazardous to ship?

No. The TA4600 series is non-hazardous for transport, which simplifies shipping and storage compared with solvent-based alternatives. TA4605 is solvent free.
